book and movie reviews?
i dont know how well this will be recieved, but being an avid reader and movie nut, i would love to hear when someone comes upon something good. i know that jaybee, LIL, IJ,G and ancientmariner are readers and nicke is a movie nut. i think we should start either a section or just keep this thread up with recommedations and reviews of movies and books
it was funny, ive been in LOS for so long i got back to the states and went to blockbuster and i had already watched all the new releases in LOS!
anyways, i really like indie films, just watched two really good ones:
City of God- its about drug dealers in the rio de janiero slums. its actually a true story about a photograher
Holy Land-it is about a rabbi student that goes astray and falls in love with a russian prostitute. pretty good, but not even close to as good as city of god
books: i cant find the thread but LIL and Jaybee were discusssing a few intellectual books, meaning of life type books. i would love to dive into a few of thses also

Books can be very subjective
What one person loves for a book, another can hate.
I find the type of book I read is often tied into what is happening in my life. If work is technically challenging, I like a rather simple book. If work is boring or quiet, I like a heavy technical book. If I am on vacation, I tend to like a mystery or historical book. And a book about philosophy can be read on all occasions.
Some starter suggestions (but I think most the book readers on this thread have encountered these books already):
a. Christopher Moore's "Calvino" series of books.
b. Christopher Robbin's "Air America" and also "The Ravens".
c. Edwin Lefevre's "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" (a favourite old "classic" of mine).

I read a good book last summer called "Bangkok 8." It's a detective novel set in Bangkok.

City of god is a fantastic film. The best film of 2005 so far for me has got to be Sin City.
Batman begins wasn't too bad either

David Young is head and shoulders the best Thai (scene not native) writer I have read..
Fast Eddies Lucky 7 agogo, Scribe (guy writing BG letters for $$ ), Thailand Joy (kinda sad), and Sukhimvit in about that oprder of preference are all really worth reading..
Even Thai girls cry was a sad but good 'scene' read.. Thought Bangkok agogo was average at best..
Phra Farang was kinda interesting, not a great read but good insight to some of the frustrations of being a farang (even a monk)..
Been reading Le Carre (Tailor of Panama as I though Rush played the movie so well) and Greene recently... Finished Rainbow 6 (pure pulp but it was thick and kept me busy for a few days) last night..
I will pick up the 'smiles' series next time I am in BKK... I was not too impressed with the Moore book I read but will probably try them...
Most of the Thai writing is pretty hack stuff IMHO.. Lots of english teachers trying to get by (Young is tho and he is my favorite).. Dont rate Leather much at all but Private Dancer has just been re edited and published..

Sin City is too f*cking weird. It's got some sick shit in it! Altho I guess it is worth seeing just for Jessica Alba who is smokin' hot beyond belief!!
Movies I like are Crash, which is a quintessential film about modern America, and Cinderella Man which has great boxing seqences.

Sin city really came into its own if you had ever been a fan of the graphic novels.. The artwork and stylisation really echo'ed the print media artwork (and use of single color etc) that was a continuation of the 'style'..
I enjoyed it for a few of its clever tricks in that way.. Didnt think it was the greatest movie around but conceptually I enjoyed it..
I wonder if they will dig deeper into the comic / graphic novel seam now (beyond spidy / batman / hulk / marvel style good bad archetypes) some of the Niel Gaiman stuff would be very visually intense.. A 3 part kid eternity I have somewhere would make a superb visual feats with the right (brave) director..Certainly improve the formulaic film creation that big budget needs now..
Very weird arthouse type film I saw.. Innocent.. Its part computer GFX, part live action, part surreal, (also I believe taken from a Graphic novel) and very interesting.. Not the best movie I have seen but incredibly creative..
Layer cake is probably my favorite romp of the last few months..

A good idea indeed!
I'm always searching for titles I haven't read or seen, so this would be of great help. Anything from Homer to King.
Having a good book at hand is important, and crucial on any travel.
Books:
"Into thin air" by Jon Krakauer
A personal account of the Everest disaster in May 1996.
"Shogun" by James Clavell
Historical fiction set in 16th century Japan. A complex story of love, war, and political intrigue.
One of my all-time favourites.
"Ham on rye" and "Post office" by Charles Bukowski
Read 'em!
Movies (No blockbusting new releases):
"City of ghosts"
A con-man goes to Cambodia to collect his share in a scam, but...
I like it because it's somewhat different, and in a great setting.
"Brazil"
Terry Gilliam... I just watched it again, and it's still a brilliant movie.

City of Ghosts is a good one.. I especially like Depardue's role and performance.. You could just feel the madness of running a bar there !!

It's kind of a "nature" film LL if you catch my drift
City of god is indeed a fantastic movie.
I recently saw a similar movie called "Maria full of grace" which is a rather small production that won a couple of awards. It is about how colombian girls get in the business of smugling cocain to the US by swallowing it.
Pretty good movie that makes you think about a thing or two.
Another movie I found interesting was "Ray" - the movie about Ray Charles. If you like his music you should really check out this movie.

Don't get me started on the bloddy "Di Vinci code"! I thought it was an awfull book that just seemed to use some very popular tourist locations to attract interest in the concept. The whole therory about the Priory of Sion has been disproved on numerous occasions, so when he starts the book with something like
"Fact: The priory of Sion is a real organisation"
I know i should of put the book down then! But like an idiot i continued reading it! The naritive was totally easy to work out what was going to happen, and what the big twist were from about the 30th or 40th chapter.
But then as its been said already in this thread, books are very subjective! So of course this is just my opinion, as friends of mine have liked it!
I must go away to my dvds now and try to work out some which are good............. I'll post again when i can!

Every second person on the train seems to be reading Da Vinci code. Overrated in my opinion. Dan Brown is a good researcher but not a good writer..
