War Of The Worlds!
The new Steven Spielberg movie is out - "War Of The Worlds." It is is based on the 1898 H.G. Wells novel of the same name. But this one is set in modern day New York City, Boston, and the New England countryside.
There is one word that best describes this movie: Spectacular!! From the creepy aliens to the Armageddon-like landscapes to the death rays, and mass destruction of cities, the special effects are impressive and compelling. The acting is not as spectacular, except for Dakota Fanning, but it is quite adequate and doesn't hurt the movie.
The thing that makes this a terrific movie, besides the effects, which are worth the price of a ticket in and of themselves, is the way Spielberg keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the film. There is never a dull moment. From when the cameras begin to roll, and we first see Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, and their family, the tension builds. Spielberg grabs you and never lets go. In that sense, it is like the first time you saw Raiders of the Lost Ark, except this movie is dead serious. No camp. No jokes. No comic relief. Grim, taut, suspenseful, gut-wrenching, panic-inducing drama! With the exception of possibly one scene, this movie is all very plausible, unlike most alien invasion films of the past. It does effectively create the sense that it is really happening and you are there for most of the movie, until near the very end.
It is difficult to compare with other movies, since it is not the best plot, or best acting, and the character delineation and development is not the best, either. But having said that, it is adequate on all those counts, as well. But any movie than can keep you on the edge of your seat for 2 full hours, can not be said to be less than an impressive piece of film-making.
Bottom line: "War of the Worlds" is a "Must-See" movie!!

I saw some clips of the interviews with Oprah where he jumped up and down on the couch, and the one where you quoted him about psychiatry.
I'm not freaked out by him. In fact, I'm not at all surprised by what he has to say. He is just mouthing the standard Scientology stuff. Those people are pretty far out there, a real cult. I could tell you things about them, but I won't, because it is dangerous to speak against them. You don't read bad stuff about them in the media, because they relentlessly track down and ruin anyone who speaks against them.
They cater to stars like Cruise and a few others and IMHO help them create their own fantasy world to live in. In that way they keep the star's ego sky high, which helps stars deal with all the criticism and crap they put up with for being famous. It doesn't work that way at all for the average Joe they get their clutches on. But I've said too much already!!
So I can't be too upset with Cruise, because I know he is caught up in a web that is far stranger than most of the movies he has ever been in. Life is truly stranger than fiction in his case.
I would love to hear what Nicole has to say about Scientology! But then she probably knows enough to keep her mouth shut!
All the same, he was a bit rough on Brooke Shields!

P.S. If any Scientologists read this, I'm sorry! I take back everything I said about your lovely church!
P.P.S. This post will self-destruct in 24 hours.

It is a thrill...
The movie is such a thrill though. I think that most BM's would love it! Several times I said, "HOLY SH#$#^##^iiii@#$%@#$%^ttt!" Out loud. And I am one to not do this as a rule.

Super special effects and the storyline is ok but a bit slow at the start, But then near the end the film just goes tits up and loses the plot for me, And the ending was shit aswell.
I would give it a 3/5, Its well worth a watch but it would never be in the same league as films like Aliens, Predetor or Independence Day IMHO...

Alien vs Predator was a good watch, one of those movies that seemed to only last 10 minutes.

Yeah I was surprised at that also.. Thought it would be a total cheese fest ruining both franchises but they actually tied it together in a workable way.. Bit basic plot but enjoyable in a swicth off kind of way..

War of the Worlds
Yep the ending sucks but thats the way the book ends...;and the earlier film version.
Speilburg does a good job for sure (He has a form of autism I dicovered recently) but I was suprised that no one tried to elaborate the end a bit.
