In the first few minutes, it became obvious that this film was another one of those "guy falls for dead girl's ghost" movies. Jesus! Talk about beating a dead horse, I thought. Can't they just once in a while come up with something original? So, expecting a rehash of a tired old standard chick flick plot, I was grimacing at the thought of sitting through such tripe for the next 90+ minutes.
I was right about 2 things: not the most original story, and a major, major chick flick! Make sure your GF brings plenty of hankies or tissue, if you take her to see this one. But, for any guy who still is hiding the least little bit of the romantic beneath his tough-guy

or cool-guy

exterior, this film will grab you in your weak spot and not let go!! As chick flicks go, this is not just a good one, but a great one!!
I've always had a soft spot for Reese Witherspoon, and liked her, even in her less notable roles. This is Reese at her best, doing her Reese thing to the max!! Tender, yet feisty, assertive, yet ultra-feminine!
As good as she is in this film, Mark Ruffalo is even better. Exceptional acting on his part combines with classic Reese to create outstanding romantic chemistry between them. The chemistry isn't physcial, there is no sex in this movie, and Mark even turns down a naked East Euro bombshell

, just so he can pursue a ghost of a girl!! Sounds ridiculous, and that scene did stretch the limits of plausiblity, but the girls will love it!!, and even I was willing to make allowances this time! For the sake of love!
So this is a very mushy movie for all those girls who are looking for the soul mate they are destined to be with for eternity. And yet for any guy who ever believed in true love, this will resurrect that buried sensation, and make you a sucker for love again. Well, at least for a few minutes, anyway!!!
How could such a stupid premise be so effective? Hard to answer that question, but ghosts or not, it just works! Credit that in large part to Mark Ruffalo's acting ability. On a scale of one to ten for chick flicks only, this is a ten. But even on the scale of all movies out so far this year, I give it a nine. That translates to 4.5 out of 5, and 3.5 out of 4.
When a movie can have me holding my breath as the climax nears its' peak, and having to pull the tissue out of my pocket and give the corners of each eye a quick dab

as the climax resolves, that is no small feat. And that plus Mark Ruffalo's performance is why I reluctantly have to give this film such a high rating! The only reason that I say reluctantly is that the whole story is really from a woman's point of view. It is every woman's romantic fantasy, and ignores some of the most basic realities of the way men really are. But what can I say? I can not deny the way I reacted to it. They got me this time!! Hats off to Ms. Witherspoon and Mr. Ruffalo!!!

P.S. There are also a lot of good laughs in this one!! I laughed out loud in several parts.
