Anyone been to Cambodia-Phnom Phen
I am planning on going to Cambodia for 3 days during my oncoming trip to thailand. Never been to Cambodia before by the way. Since it will be my only trip this year, i thought i visit another neighbouring country of thailand to see what its like.
I just wanted to know if any1 been there and can recommend a hotel or guesthouse in Phnom Phen, close to all the action.
And do i just get a random taxi from the airport to take me to my destination.
Any info is welcome.

I have just gotten my passport back with the Cambo visa inside. We found good info for Flamingo's hotel in Pnom Penh here on the forum and booked that very simply.

2 very recent threads were done by Andymon and Jimbulljag on their recent 2007 tours. Just do a search. Not sure if they are in tour reports or in this section.

Weapons and ammunition is not my type of fun, but I laughed pretty hard too.
Give me a rocket propelled grenade and a cow please ...

I recommend Flamingos also....quite inexpensive....good value. Nice bar directly across the street with a reasonable amount of lookers.

Not my idea of fun either, and probably not a laugh a minute for the cow!

Visa on arrival is quick and easy in Cambodia. Bring a photo, they usually give you the application forms on the plane.

I did it in advance, I thought it might help me avoid big immigration queues.
You can download the form from their UK website. I sent mine last Thursday and got it back the following Friday, so they turned it around in 5 working days.
It cost me £15 plus a whopping £8 for postage.

Phnom Phen
I can recommend the Billabong Hotel. It is right in the centre of the action and is run by two aussie guys.
The hotel has a large swimming pool...just what you need in the heat of Phnom Phen.
Included is great a la carte breakfast any time you wake up! My last breakfast was at 4pm after a heavy night out.
Can also recommend nearby Walkabout Club and Heart of Darkness for fun. Be careful at night, always travel with mototaxi between bars and hotel and never antagonise any local men (as they often carry weapons)
PP generally has a blackout most nights so bring a torch for your room.

I can also confirm that the Flamingo hotel is excellent! Staff are great and "Mum" on the roof-top bar is probably the funnest person I have ever met. " dont look at me, I am not your mum"

I stayed at both Flamingos and Billabong. Both fine hotels, though Billabong is more for the average tourist. If you're bringing home a wide variety of female friends the management won't object, but you may get some raised eyebrows from fellow guests (which can be fun in and of itself).
While I agree you should take motos at night, I never had a problem walking between Flamingos and Heart of Darkness or any of the other bars on that street.
The motodops are great for getting around the city. Just hire a guy you like for $5/day. I've never had much time for the motosai drivers in Thailand, but for some reason I've always made great friends with the motodops in Phnom Penh.

one of the best things about Cambo
having your own driver everyday
my guy Black would get to my hotel at 11am and just wait outside until i showed up

If you're talking about Poipet, that's not Cambodia. Though it happens to be located within Cambodia's borders, it's actually a province of hell. If you can get past it, the real Cambodia is a wonderful place.

Why were you turned back?
