Capitol Guesthouse (capitol@online.com.kh) can arrange your visa and transport. You'll feel at home there mate as its full of Aussies.

Most (if not all) of the Guest houses/Hotels in Phnom Penh can arrange Vietnam visas... I stayed at the Diamond GH, near the riverside, beside the old market. $5 a night for accomodation. I stayed in 2 other places too but the Diamond was my favourite.
They arranged my Vietnam Visa for $33 (1 month visa), Takes about a day to sort, but can be done quicker if you give the guys in the GH your passport early in the morning.
Buses cost anything from $5 to $10 from PP to Saigon, takes 6 to 7 hours. Its an uneventful trip, everything is done for you by the bus guys, no thinking required at all...

I in the process of planning an Oct trip.Get cambo visa on arrival at Phnom Penh airport, then apply for Vietnam visa. Take the bus to Ho Chi Min City (politically correct!), then apply for next tourist visa whilst there, flying back to Bkk then on down here again. I had heard omewhere that you can get visas at the crossing into Vietnam but find no back up to this so am sticking to he safe route and getting it in advance.

Si you might want to take a boat from PP to Chau Doc - more interesting than the bumpy old bus.

Thanks for that i know its only a 170k drive but the 6 hour timeline gave an indicator of the roads!!! Boat would e a more interesting trip any way I reckon. Am on my way to the Indo China Mekong U know what, but have to be out of Thailand early rather than wasting money on an extension. I thought it would be a good chance to broaden my horizons and knock 2 more countries of my list.

Pretty sure you would appreciate the river option, Chau Doc is worth a night (or few if you meet someone nice ) - perhaps a trip is in order sometime later this year - hummm would be nice to do something interesting - not quite up to Sefton's epic tuk-tuk journey ... Oz or NZ next year maybe ... think getting island fever and need some cerebral stimulation.

It's super easy and cheap to get a Vietnam Visa in Phnom Phen. I got mine directly from the Vietnamese embassy. You give the guard at the front gate your info and come back later in the day. I think it cost me about $35 if I remember correctly for expedited service.

When i was in Phnom Phen, i was going to go to Vietnam and got speaking to two guys who had taken the boat, said it was a nightmare got bitten to hell by mosys etc, they hated the ride.
Advised me strongly to fly if i wanted to go to Vietnam.
