Cambodia Article
When we came back from Cambodia in April I wrote a couple of articles, which I do quite a bit of so nothing unusual there. But, for some reason, this particular one has shot up the search engine rankings and now if you google 'tuol sleng history', which a lot of people do, my article shows up at number one out of 58million. It's just above the Wikipedia entry.
I'm not much of a search engine scientist, but I'm pretty pleased with that . Here's the link to the article, Tuol Sleng - A brief history of the Khmer Rouge killing machine at Tuol Sleng and Choung Ek in Cambodia. , with humble apologies to my pal Dawsey if he needs to delete the link.

Yeah, its pretty disturbing what went on under the Khmer Rouge regime. The Ideology behind it, how they implemented the torture, killings, forced confessions etc...What they did to their own people... Both there and the killing fields outside of Phnom Penh were very sobering places.
Voices from S-21 by David Chandler is a grim read (I see you referenced him in the article). Off the rails in Phnom Penh is a good wee read too although its more about the Prostitution, Drugs, Guns and the types of Ex-pats that were living there during the mid 90's...

Very good article Steve, you captured the "affect" of the place and of the time, very foreboding.

Thanks for thumbs ups
On the David Chandler remark, his work on the subject is pretty impressive but very scholarly so not easy to find.
As far as 'Off The Rails...' goes, I think the book deals with the recent history of Cambodia very well and I found it useful. There is obviously the guns girls and ganja aspect there, but it's also very good for referance.

I exchanged a few e-mails with Amit Gilboa, and he's actually earning a living as a musician in Thailand now oddly enough. Seems like a decent bloke too.

Hope you write some more !!

You can always hope .....this taken from another MB.
"...Kentucky Fried Chicken expands in Cambodia// 03 Sep 2007
QSR Brands Bhd recently announced a deal with Yum! Restaurants Asia Pte Ltd. They will soon expand the KFC brand in Cambodia, with four initial outlets for the capital city of Phnom Penh.
The deal encompasses QSR teaming up with Royal Group of Companies Ltd and Rightlink Corporation Limited Hong Kong to oversee the operation of KFC in Cambodia, with QSR taking a 55% stake, RGC controlling 35%, and RCL 10%.
QSR will open the first four restaurants in the coming year. It will continue to expand the brand in Cambodia, opening up approximately two outlets every subsequent year."

Whatever our feeling about the americanization or westernization of cultures.. You can bet your back teeth they want all the inward investment they can get..
When your dirt poor on 1USD per day, you dont care who you work for and 'culture' would have a very different meaning..

Good point.Just like Thailand is a changed place regarding westernization,my feeling is that it`s happening even faster in Cambodia !! Until a few years ago it was backward when it came to the influx of western investment, but things are happening very fast there now !!
On my first trip there exactly a year ago,we where able to find 4 ATM`s in all of Phnom Penh.....in april this year there are more than 30...and 4 big banks was built and opened in that 6 months period ....and I guess the BIG shopping center on the outskirts of PP on the road to the airport is soon to be finished !!
On a selfish note many westerners (including myself) wants things in this area to remain as they are,but the people here can`t live and progress in a beautiful surrounding alone only.....let`s just hope they don`t lose to much of who they are on the way to progress........ .

Heavy and sobering piece there Steve in OP - deserved recognition.
Very fortunate to have first come to Thailand 12 years ago - but wish had been 20 years+ ago, can imagine the way things were back then.
My last trip to Cambo was in 2003 - from Pad and Major Tom's reports its changed so much already - pity but thats the price of progress. Burma and North Korea doubtless await similar fates when they finally swap military dictatorship for consumerism.

I don't think it really fair of us to moan about change ruining these places. As LIL says, a lot of them are dirt poor and welcome foreign money; they need it.
