4000 Islands. Laos, Cambodia

A short trip report from repeter.

Me and GF went to 4000 Islands in Laos. I flew Air Asia from BKK to Ubon Rachathani where my GF from Roi-Et meet up.
We stayed 2 nigths at Sri Isaan hotel. One evening we went to a floating restaurang on the Moon river. (thanks landofsmiles for the tips in another thread)
Then we went to the border crossing at Chong Mek. I got VOA for $31 and $1 tea money, my TGF who have a thai passport just payed the $1.

From Laos border to Pakse we tok a private car to Sedone river guesthouse. Very nice and cheap. We stayed there 2 nights.
One evening we was in an indian restaurang and find a sticker about minibus from Pakse to 4000 islands. We booked it. Next morning the minibus picked us up at the hotel and drived us to Nakasang and then boat to Don Dhet.

On Don Dhet we rented a bungalow for 75 Bath per night (se photos) It was lao standard, just a bed with moskito net and a toilet. The only complains I have is about the horny gay rosters that start gol WERY early.
And they dont have electricity on the islands yet. They have generators they put on a few hours after sunset.

We walked to island Don Khon and looked at SEA largest waterfall. And we rented a lao longtail boat that took us to Cambodia for looking at Irrawaddy dolphins. We saw them jumping and swimming. Nice!
I did not have my passport with me but i could buy a "ticket" for $1 to stay some hours in Cambodia. The border control vas just a hut in nowhere.

When we left Don Dhet we rented a boat to Nakasang and from there a minibus to Pakse bus station. A ticket Pakse to Ubon cost 200 baht with aircon bus.

The 4000 islands is what i think Patong was 40 years ago. So if you want a break from Disneyland Phuket or Pattaya go there before it loses itīs charm.

Went there a few years ago and really enjoyed it. At that time we were warned to stay well clear of the border as it was thought the Cambodian border guards were likely to shoot. We did get to see a couple of the dolphins very briefly but they were not very active for our visit.

A nice little side trip you could have taken would have been to see the falls on the Mekhong, the point where the French were unable to navigate further up river. The remains of the rail line they used to portage round the falls can still be seen there. They're not huge falls but there is a hell of a lot of water coming through there.

Thanks for the post and for the photos. I will definitely add this to the list.

Do you think that the trip would be very difficult without a Thai traveling companion?
