Taxi meter from the airport
Are the taxi meter cars parked out side the terninal or tucked away somewhere else in the carpark like phuket and limo buisnesses trying to get you to use their cars at rip off prices.
If I remember corectly its only a short trip from the airport into the centre, anyone confirm this one.

After you pick up your suitcase at Baggage Reclaim, go out through the doors into the main terminal area and turn left. Walk down to the end of the concourse and that is where the meter Taxis pick up. There is usually someone there with a clipboard who controls the flow, just tell him/her you want a taxi and your destination.

Right near the area where you pick up your luggage there is a taxi assign desk it's before you even walk out to the main part of the airport.
Get a ticket from them and it's 120 baht to anywhere in the city.
Don't try to go outside and negociate especially if you are arriving late.

Imho Chiang Mai has a good airport - just the right size & friendly.
Yes - I went to that taxi desk near the luggage collection area & purchased a taxi ticket for about 120 bht. The cab was parked in carpark, close by!
Town is not far from airport... only 10 mins by car at the most.

Turn right when you exit the airport, and its a hundred yards or so down the road.

It depends on what exit you use but its on the right side of the airport building. I think I paid 450 baht last time.
The main reason I dont like airport limos anymore is that 4 months ago or so I bought my ticket but they had no cars available, after 20 mins waiting they suggested I shared the car with someone else (who also paid in full). I used to drive myself to airport but then we have the no parking space problem. Last high season was very busy at airport, so no parking space and no taxis available problem.
I think its time for airport to add more parking space due to the high number of tourists we have now. This is only a problem during the busiest time of the year, but still annoying,

That air port needs to be made bigger all around. After getting into the car to go to Patong in April, it was a good 20-30 minutes to even get out of the parking lot. Just stuck in lines of cars trying to exit.

When last I was in Phuket, I went to the taxi meter stand, where I met a Dutch fellow and we decided to split a taxi as we were both going to Patong.
They got really pissed at us, and told us we were not allowed to share a taxi. After some arguing, they said we could share one for 400 Baht apiece. We told them where they could go in no uncertain terms, and there was a lot of rude remarks and gestures made by them at us. We told them thank you very kindly, you bunch of a-holes, and went and got a "limo," for 600, thereby saving 100 per, and having a good laugh as the limo drove by the taxi stand and they yelled names at us and we laughed and gave them the finger!

I'm surprised that you haven't got a regular driver. I got a card from one guy a few visits back and he told me to just send me an SMS the day before I arrived, stating my name, the flight number and expected arrival time. This I do now and if the guy can't do it himself. then I get another fella waiting out the front with a card that has my name on it. A quick check to make sure that he's working on behalf on "X" and off we go !
Same fare as you'd pay at the limo counter, i.e. 550baht.

Going back to the original question - which was about taxi location at Chiang Mai airport, they now have a Meter Taxi counter inside the airport terminal building. You pay the counter staff 50baht and they organise a taxi. The driver comes inside and escorts you out to the waiting taxi and off you go.
The cost was 62baht when I was there at the start of this month.

Have you not seen how much fuel has gone up over the past couple of months? Over B38 per litre diesel and 40b per litre petrol (as of Friday, so may have gone up again already), expect B50 soon and all the run on costs from it. B50 increase in taxi fare is nothing compared to what is about to come. Thank the speculators driving up the price of oil.

This is VERY good information. I went outside door, you can not get back in. Luckily I got a taxi for 120 baht, same as inside. Just use the little kiosk, same same baht and you'll be sure to get correct price.

Lucky you.
One thing to note, the original information is over 2 years old. When I went there recently (start of May 2008), I paid 50baht at the kiosk and meter fare of 62baht for the ride to the hotel. I was not made aware of tickets which cost 120baht for anywhere in the city, so I assume they no longer do this. If the 50baht "kiosk fee" is included as well, then it works out at 70baht for the ride which is about right for most places centrally, but would now be too low for any trips over a longer distance.
