Hotels in Chiang mai
I know there are a few threads with a similar topic on the forum, but I could use some up to date info, I will be staying in Chiang mai for four days at the beginning of December and I want a hotel in the night market/ loykroh road areas, between 1000-1500 THB a night, one that defiantly does not charge a joiner fee, any recommendations?
The last time I was there (about a year ago) I stayed at the Rydges Amora Taepae (no joiner fee then), it was great but I read recently that they have started charging a joiner fee of 1000 THB!

Welcome to the board fellow taff
The pornping tower is ok Its right by the night market. I stayed there last month for 1600B a night for a delux double room with my Thai GF but she had to leave for Bangkok 2 nights before me so i brought in a reserve.
Sorry can't help you on the Joiner fee part as maybe or maybe not they thought it was still the same girl. They never asked though.

The Duangtawan is right in the area and in the price range. I didnt paid any joiner fee there last year. The better choice imho is raming lodge, much more nicer rooms and also no joiner fee. Both hotels are in loy kroh rd, so really close to the bars and night bazaar.

Thanks for the advice guys, Pornping tower looks Ok but the Raming lodge looks great, the rooms look especially nice but I might opt for the Duangtawan because of the swimming pool, need to do something about my white skin! I'll make up my mind tomorrow!

I too was interested in the Raming Lodge, Chiang Mai. Rooms look great and the room rate is reasonable too. However, I e-mailed Raming Lodge on the question of bringing a lady back to my room to stay overnight. This is an extract from their reply:- "we charge for extra person THB. 500.- per night. It's hotel's policy."

I've been to Thailand 15 times in the last ten years and I love it there but I find this joiner fee/no joiner fee a pain, you try loads of hotels and find one that's perfect and then the next time you go there, only a couple of months later and they've started charging for overnight guests!
I had an amazing experience a few years ago in Bkk, my friend and I stayed at the same hotel, we both booked double rooms but I booked through an agency and he booked direct with the hotel, I didn't have to pay extra to take a girl to my room but he had to pay 500 THB!
There seems to be no consistancy about it, it makes booking a hotel an absolute pain!

Downtown Inn was 1200bht this May. Nice clean rooms. Has small pool. Also stayed at Duangtawan. Lots more expensive for not so nice a room. Overrated hotel.

I had same experience in a hotel for one night in Bangkok a year ago.
I booked a room for 2 persons from home through a web site (myself and some BG), at checkin hotel staff told me it would cost 300 baht for overnight visitors, I then showed them my initial booking papers and suddenly no problem

noted comment on out of date info...most of the posts in this section are 12-24 months old and next to useless..drove around for 30 minutes trying to find "moon view river" place as per old post from 2005. Gone. website is still there though...anyways, staying here right now in AUGUST2007 at Raming lodge. As noted elsewhere, it is excellent. recently renovated. good facilities inc room wifi and defin GF. 1500 low season.
Stayed at other 5 star place last night and could get out quick enough. hence, got tour driver to take me to alternative, and here I am..
right near the main street action , clean, well appointed.
go for it.
expecting remedial action now for being negative. boo hoo.

When I left the Uk last December for I month in Thailand I still hadn't booked a room in Chiang mai, the few hotels that I liked and thought were GF were full, anyway, I stayed in Pattaya first and before leaving there I booked a hotel in Chiang mai with a small travel agent on Pattaya 3rd road near soi 13, my choice was exyremley limited, turned out there was an international flower expo going on in CM and most of the hotels were full. I ended up in the Park hotel, it's a bit far out on Chang Klan Road, same chain as the Empress (I think) and on the same road but a little further out! about 45 min walk to the night market, I think I paid about 1100 THB a night, good value, nice hotel, pool on the roof, staff friendly and helpful, I took a girl back one night and there was no extra charge, they didn't even check her ID (but I would prefer they check the girls ID) had a good time there, I would recommend this hotel as long as you don't mind being a little further away from the action! I'm off again next month, staying three weeks in Thailand and a week in the Philippines, in Thailand I'll be in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket, about a weekin each! In the Philippines I'll be in Manila and Angeles, never been there before and looking forward to it!

Raming looks good but one of the messages in this thread, posted by firecat, says that they charge 500 THB joiner fee! For me, (a single man that goes on holiday alone and might meet someone that I want to bring back to my room) the joiner fee/no joiner fee is the most fustrating thing about booking a hotel in Thailand!

Yes, but Firecats info was from 2006. Look at Mr Swabis post where he clearly states that no guest fee is now charged for that hotel in AUGUST 2007.
To be on the safe side, I would email the hotel, and if guest friendly, print out the mail and take it with you to save any "misunderstandings" upon check out.

I stayed at Raming Lodge in JULY 2007 and there is no joiners fee. Actually when I booked in alone they gave me breakfast coupons for 2 persons for each day without me even asking 55555
I recommend Raming Lodge, great on every account and right in the middle of the action. Not that there is so much action in CM but what is there is very very close.

Thats my experience there. I booked in as a single and just brought a girl back to the hotel. No questions for joiner fee. Very nice hotel and staff. Havent been there now for a while things can change, but it doesnt look like that from posts above.Beside the pool, raming lodge will allways be my choice in Chiang Mai. Concerning Duangtawan, yes there is a pool , i think somewhere at the 6th floor, but canīt recommend to use it.Looked more like a messy place and not many guests used it ( i had a room just above and so always a look on the pool). About the rooms in Duangtawan, i have been also disappointed, as the entrance area looks really nice until you come to your room.....gfrrrrrrrrr.But no joiner fee at that time too. Both hotels are in the middle of the action(same road) and close to the night baazar.

just a note on the strange phenomena called JFs....
I stayed at a Central Hotel (5 star) on Samui once quite a while back now and booked for 2 people as I always do....the first night....well i should say morning....after a huge bender ending up in Supersub at Lamai I turned up with a gal in tow and the hotel staff tried to charge me a 300bht joiner fee....
after a brief highly inebriated discussion I shrugged my shoulders muttered mai pen rai and took off to loom with my gal and never thought much more of it.....
I took several gals back with me of course during this time and not a word was said...when I got the bill I saw that rather than being charged a JF......on the nights where I hadn't taken a gal back (which was only a couple of nights) I had actually received a 300bht discount off the loom for those nights........
Funny some of my mates always reckon I debate/argue best when I am pi$$ed.........

emailing aprtments
I am thinking of booking a trip to Chaing Mai, as i have been to phuket and want to see another part of Thailand. I have emailed a bunch of apartments and they all so far are gf places. In addition they are remarkable cheaper. I plan on staying a month and so far the average place for an air cond unit that looks spacious is 4000baht. Is this to good to be true or is it that these places are just not sought after by the average tourist?
just adding my 2 cents

4000 seems a bit cheap to me. It really depends on the location as you will have to either rent a motorcycle (the way to go) or get around on tuk tuks.
6000 k in a good central area with air con would be a good deal.

It seems to be about right (possibly start of the lower end ?), check this website for comparison.

C H hotel in Chiang Mai
At my last stay in CM, i stayed in C H Hotel, 10, soi 8, Charoenprathetroad,
+66 (0) 53 820977-80.
It is right in the middle of the night-market.
In low season prices are 850 bth (bf included for 2 pers
For me it was good value for my money....
It looks very impressive , the lobby, very stylish, rooms are a little less, but oke.
And they are very guestfriendly, even for 2 guests....
