Question Some help need re travel Chiang Mai and Koh Samui please

Hello, I wonder if any of you who are more experienced in these matters can offer some advice and answers to my questions:

Q1. The train trip from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. - Necessary to book before arriving in Thailand, or better when in Bangkok? I'll have 5 days there before actually leaving by train for Chiang Mai

Q2. I'd like to fly in the simplest and most economical way from Chiang Mai to Samui on the 7 July. I seem to find that the only flight is Bangkok Air at 5000+Bht. Any other suggestions. Many of the discount lines seem not to fly to Samui.

Q3. If arriving in early evening, how much time should one alllow from Samui airport to ferry by taxi?

Q4. Do ferry's operate in evening, or only during day. Any idea of latest time. I'm referring to ferry to Had Rin

Q5. And finally flying Samui to Phuket. Any suggestions of airline?

Thanks for taking the time read this and for your assistance

Kind regards

Hi freesoul

Welcome to the forum.

I can answer a couple for you.

Ferry and other timetables you might find useful are here.

Bangkok Airways is the only airline presently flying in and out of Samui Airport. They own the airport, and are therefore the only operators, so no choice there.

That also answers your last question, Samui to Phuket.

Here is a site that provides some good information om train travel in Thailand (and elsewhere):
How to travel by train in Thailand - a complete guide
I have no experience traveling with train in Thailand, however, I have found that the sleepers on the Malaysian trains tend to sell out.

If you have time you can fly first to Bangkok, then to Surat Thani. Then there is a bus from Surat Thani Airport to the ferry to Samui.

Bus + Ferry ~ 250 BHT
One-Two-Go by Orient Thai Airlines = 1750 BHT per trip.
Songthaew on Samui = 50 BHT half around the island

Be careful: Some of the low cost airlines now seem to operate from the old airport.
