Chiang Rai .....????

Who has been to Chiang Rai and is it worth a trip....????

What are the best sights to see and visit ....????

Also what is a reasonable hotel to stay at .....??????

Nightlife is not an issue as I will be with my g/f but I would be interested in any information.

I was there with my family about 13 years ago. At that time we traveled around with a tour group and spent 2 nights up there.

We stayed in the Dusit Island Hotel. The hotel was really good. It is situated on a small island in the Mekong river, if I remember well.
From there we made a tour to the Golden Triangle, which is a beautiful area. We also visited some of the Hill tribes. That was interesting but also touristic, which one can expect.

Didn't do any nightlife excursions as I was with my family ...

I was there a couple of years ago......

Half day longtail trip along Mae Kok to elephant camp was good...can ride elephants in water along river bank....

Full day trip to Golden Triangle then to Mae Sai/Talichek in Burma for shopping then to Long Neck village was interesting....forget boat trip to Laos Island ...very boring

Cannot recommend any hotels that I saw or stayed in.

There is no nightlife so being with g/f is good idea. Though night market had a square with live music.

Condoms and Cabbages was only decent restaurant I found....

It was worthwhile going....if you go in winter bring a jumper....

There is nightlife not a lot but it is there.

On one of the main streets there is a clock tower in the middle of a crossroads, On one Soi from there, there are 3 or 4 beer bars and at least 3 or 4 go go's which are pretty tame but some of the talent is ok.

Known locally as Patpong Chiang Rai.

There are plenty of things to see for a few days, especially if you have a vehicle of your own. I stayed with a friend and he had a 4x4 and knew of sightseeing places off the beaten track.

I was there two weeks ago with my wife and had a great time. We hired a car from Avis in Chiang Mai and drove up. Took about 3 hours at a very leisurely pace. We stayed at the Wiang Inn and cannot recommend it highly enough. Room cost was about $75 AUD through Asiarooms.com. The hotel is completely non smoking and it really was a pleasure to stay there. Internet was expensive about 300 baht for an hour. Breakfast was satisfactory. very close to the night bazaar with some really cheap eats. We ate each night for less than $7.00AUD including a large bottle of singha. We drove up to the border crossing and around to the golden triangle. We also visited the King's mothers house not far from the city and a few minutes walk (no more than 3 minutes) were some of the most spectacular gardens I have seen. (by the way I'm not nbormally a garden person) Our stay was only short but we will return because there is so much to see up there. Enjoy!!
