just stayed at rydges amora hotel, does have joiner fee of 600 baht.
but is a good hotel in a good spot close to action.
maybe a bit dearer than B1000 a night but a very good breakfast is included and they treat the girls as just another guest.

Cool GF and cheap

When I stay in Chiang Mai I stay at the Montri Hotel (opposite the Taipai gate). They are GF and a reasonable price (600 Baht last time I was there). Just up the street about 100m is the Top North Hotel and they too are GF and cheap.

The Hash House Harriers Bar is on the same street too!!

I am thinking about booking here for a stay in january. I was wondering if you had booked a single or a double. 600 baht extra on top of the double may sway me to look else where.

How did the trip go? I'm thinking of going up during my stay in LOS in Jan/feb. Probably stay Loi Khro Road/night bazaar area. Any recommendations/tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

I would actually recommend the Montri Hotel already mentioned by Crustacian, the rooms are small in size and the shower could have done with better water pressure, those are the only negatives I can think of. But the rooms were very clean and comfortable.

He mention 600 baht when he was there but it's now 700 for high season, the reception staff are superb and have a reasonably priced tour booking desk inside the very nice looking lobby. No safe in room but good safety box system and I felt the staff worth trustworthy just because of how proffesional they seem.
The location of the Montri is superb and it is a short walk through Tae pai gate and turn right to get to Soi Loi Krho. Every single tuk tuk driver knew the Montri wherever I was in chiang mai, so was easy to get back to without any hassle.

I would not recommend the other hotel he mentioned though, although the Top North does have a swimming pool (unlike the montri) there were things about the place I didn't like.
I didn't stay there but I checked the rooms out one day, went to see one of their best rooms at 900 baht a night to find the bed linen was very dirty and looked stained. The windows were dark and unwashed and the room just felt unclean and shabby.
Worst of all is that the staff were all very young and seemed completely ting tong, I noticed while I chatted with them that other guests would hand their keys over when going out and the staff would just ignore them and not pick the keys up. They also seemed to be struggling to cope because they had to deal with 3 guests at the same time (5 staff were there behind the desk)
I asked one of them about the safety box and it turned out they just put your valuables in an envelope which goes into a big cupboard with everyone else's stuff. The security part is that your write your name across the sealed part of the envelope, I noticed their inefficieny (or what seemed like) within just 15 mins of chatting with them and I don't know about you guys but I would not trust a safety box system like that ? Bah maak maak!!!

There are plenty of better hotels than the Montri but for far higher prices, but it's good value of the asking price.
In case you decide to try them ot check them out..

Try sending the hotel an e-mail and asking them if they charge a joiner fee for overnight guests.

I just can highly recommend the Raming lodge. Very beautiful hotel in lana style. Very GF no joiner fee. Hotel is in Loi Krah were the action is. Just some meters out of the hotel have beer bars, pool bars etc. Close to night bazzar. The room i had was big, very clean and beautyful furniture. Bathroom OK and clean. Nice place to relax, close to the action and still quiet. Stayed in duang Tawan and Lotus before, Lotus far from the action but GF, Duang Tawan also GF, no joiner fees in any of them. Raming lodge best price/quality!

Donīt remember exactly the price but think it was about 1500.

Stayed 4 nights at Laithai Guesthouse with my gf. 700 Baht per night, nice pool in the middle area. Easy to walk everywhere.

Had great evenings at the bar. Different style to Phuket, more relaxed. Nice girls from Burma (Myanmar)

I stayed in the "Chiang Mai Sheraton", for 4 nights, in December 2005.

Very nice hotel. Friendly, prompt service...with a smile. It's about a 5 minute tuk tuk to the center of the city. But I thought it was worth the ride.

I had a "suite"...I think around $130US/day. Well worth it!

If you are on a budget, do NOT stay at the Top North Guest House in Chiang Mai. I made the mistake of booking into that place for my last visit in December. I booked for 5 days and only stayed 1 night. The place is a pit !!
In fact I only stayed for about 3 hours as we stayed up drinking til 5 in the morning. It was that bad. Rooms were very small and noisy. The door didn't open properly and there was a bunch of shifty looking women staying on the floor above. Straight after breakfast we packed and checked into another guesthouse.

Pimping my hotel

I know most BM's are looking for a good budget hotel but if you want to step up a bit and have a great Thai experience check out Manathai village it's near all the action (night bazaar, bars, etc) the website is www.manathai.com.

PM me and I can give you a much better rate than what is listed.

I work at the hotel and it's very nice.

Cheers!

The sheraton there is not very good value as there are quite a very boutique hotels that offer a much better room, and atmosphere.

Hey Nels',

I'm going from Hua Hin to Chiang Mai, next month.

Taking Robert (up), on his generous offer.

The "Manathai Village", certainly looks like a first rate operation. And, knowing Robert...(even just a little), I supsect it will be "Grande"!

I don't know about direct from Phuket/Chiang Mai (I tu lacy tu look)...but, I'm flying from Chiang Mai, direct to Phuket...on Sept 25.

Later - Gator,

Pablo

P.S. Airport designator for Phuket is "HKT"... Chiang Mai is "CNX" !

Get it right dude...or back to flight school with you! 55555

I make the trip to CM about twice a month and I'm surprised that I can fly direct on Thai from CM to PHuket but not other way around. So sometimes I have to spend the night in Bangkok then fly up to CM the following day.

Nelsonone PM me on rates for the hotel and I'll set you up, just ask Pablo.

However I can't post rates on the open forum for forum members. Also let me know the dates so I can arrange my schedule to meet up with you there in CM.

Cheers!

Some good recommendation here. Cheers.

Has anyone been to CM recently or planning to before the end of the year?

Similar to the OP, I am looking for a good value, girl-friendly hotel near the nightlife.

Just finished a short stay in Chiang Mai.

Excellent accomodations at Manathai Village.

Very close to night bazzar, and I think it's girl friendly??? (brought tiirak with)
