recommended wireless routers !

hello all, ok i have a desktop with an ASDL broadband connection. i have a USB modem and its gash so i want to get rid. so im looking at one of these wireless routers with built in modems. my connection is 1mbps by the way.

i have narrowed my choice down to a netgear wireless router or a linksys one. can anybody tell me which brand you think is better and why?

also new routers on the market have this thing called MIMO technology which is supposed to be faster than b and g network so id like to get that too.

i really havnt got a bog about all this networking stuff.

hope you can advise

alan

I don't know about all the technical details but I've had a Netgear router with 4 x wireless ports + 4 x cable ports for 18 months or so and it's been fine. Good range etc and good speed. I use the laptop in an adjacent apartment through 5 brick walls and 30 metres away - no probs.

We have 2 x PCs + 1 x server hard-wired + 1 x PC and a laptop wireless going through it downloading at least 8GB a month in music, plus accessing data from the server all the time - I'm happy with it.

Can't help more than that sorry, I'm an IT dunce. Turn 'em on and use 'em is my motto.

ye, USB modems suck. the only concievable good reason to use one is if you machine doesn't have an ethernet port but does have working USB ports.

Go your local PCWorld, or Staples or watever you have in Dublin and have a look and play with the stuff on display. And if you can find a non-spotty shop assistant, pick their brains too.

Maybe you're ADSL provider recommend a particular make/model; have you looked at their web site?

I've had a Netgear wireless router for just over a year, and once set up is a good reliable piece of kit.
If you need to buy a wireless network card for you PC, then its usually suggested you get the same brand as your router, less conflicts. Saying that I have a linksys card and Netgear router
One other I can recommend you have a look at is an Odenza router which is apparently one of the easiest to set up out of the box.
As suggested,a word at PC World should help you.
