Internet problems and the solution

I have been having a big problem recently with dropped connections and decided to have a good look at it this weekend.

I have cable broadband, and suspected the cable modem was faulty as one has already been replaced, but on testing the it using the modem cable into the PC, I had a great connection and things were much quicker.

I tried re setting the wireless router and found the problem. The router (Netgear) and only 14months old was kaput.

This morning I got another router,54g this time instead of 54b, set it up with WEP in about 20mins and connected 2 laptops to it as well

The difference in speed is amazing, the web pages load in a fraction of the time, and so far things are stable.

I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself,as a total beginner a couple of years ago to do this, so much so that I thought I'd share it with the experts

Well done.

It is all pretty logical and straight forward when you just stand back and think about it. The biggest problem, even IT professionals fall into, is they start off down one train of thought to fix a problem, and then proceed with blinkers on, and forget about looking beyond the obvious.

While we work on main frames and large data centers, its the same thought processes that you use on a PC. As I always tell newbies, think outside the square.

Thanks Steve.

I somewhat envy you guys in IT now, and the money that can go with being good at your job.

I remember back to when I was 21, and had a job in a big chemical company as a computer operator on one of those huge IBM things that was bigger than a removal truck. All those reels of digital tape to load, it was a shame I didn't have the knowhow to become a programmer in those days, circa 1970, as I would probably be long retired.

I gave it all up when I got married as the money was rubbish and I needed to save for a house,
