Deleting Files
I just scanned my HD and found 42,000 recoverable files. I know that things don't actually delete when you bin them, so how do you really delete stuff? Is there a pice of software out there that will do it for you?

First thing to try is
Right click on the selected disk partition in windows explorer
Click Properties
Click Disk Cleanup
When its completed a new window will open, and on that will be listed files that are eligble for cleanup. Have a look and make sure, and then click OK
Secondly run a scan on the disk partition
Right click on disk in windows explorer
Click Properties
Click Tools tab
Click Check Now
Make sure you check both checkboxes for these items
"Automatically fix file system errors"
"Scan and attempt recovery of bad blocks"
Click Start
If the disk partition you want to scan is your boot partition, then you will be asked if you want to schedule a scan after the next boot, select the appropriate response.
Depending on the size of your disk, this may take sometime.
Another thing that I recommend people do, is to defragment their disks. See the other post I have done about this

I bought a McAfee job-lot "bundle" about 2 years ago and part of it was "Diskclean" which allows me to "delete" or "shred" anything that is in the Trash folder. On it's own they charge £25 for Diskclean so maybe not a good idea, I'm not sure if there's anything about that's free like freeware or shareware. Have a look on www.download.com there may be something there to help.

Cheers guys. I actually found Winclear myself, that is what told me I had 42thou files in there.
I found a little programme called windows cleanup! which has just run for an hour and deleted 52 thousand files and freed up 1.1gb of disc space.
I will try the stuff that SteveM suggested too, but this sems to have really helped, the PC is far zippier now.
Does this mean all the temp\deleted files are gone and can never come back? How can I check that?

If your showing free space increase, then they have gone.
A regular, like monthly housekeeping regime can be really useful.

Probably all your gigabytes worth of temporary internet files. You will find now that when you visit your favourite sites, it will initially be slower as all the files need to be downloaded again.
