Wi-fi woes

I really haven't had a lot of luck this past 6weeks with my wireless network
In Dec,my Netgear router packed up and I got another and everything has been fine until this past week.
Every evening I had to reboot the cable set top box to re -connect to the internet and it was getting crazy.

I disabled the router, and just connected the ethernet cable straight to the PC. That got me a connection, but I was still having to to the rebooting every so often.
On Wed last I couldn't get any connection at all
Same Thurs and Fri. So yesterday I tried to get things sorted out.

I rang the tech help at my ISP, NTL and after some fiddling around with settings, I renamed the PC and got a new IP address.
Rebooted and I had a wired connection.
Time to try the router again......................nothing, the internet was showing, but no wireless.
I reinstalled the software, but couldnt get any wireless connection at all

This morning,I got the tech support at Netgear to test my router and its fcuked..........again. It only lasted 6weeks

Down to Staples where I got it and they were great, replaced it with a Linksys Broadband router and I have just set it up and everything is fine again.

I couldnt recommend Netgear routers after my experience with them (2 broken in 18months),so I'll be interested to see how the Linksys one performs.

Out of curiousity, what make router do any of you guys use that run a home network, and what is your experience of the brand?

Linksys

I have a Linksys and it works great. They have a web site that use can use to set it up, which came in handy.

I've hauled a Lynksys 'network everywhere' line router around many hospitals (I use it to spoof a MAC address so I can connect outsider machines to hospital or university networks). It's not wireless though. I installed a netgear (again hard-wired) router in a friend's house (refuses to consider using wireless, thinks the Martians will hack his PC) and that's workd flawlesly for several years. The line occasionally FUBARs requiring resetting of the modem and router, but that's an NTL problem, not us.

I casn't recall the make of the modem I put into my bosses home, but it ran from a BT ADSL to an Apple airport (he's one of those sick-fcker mac-luser types). It was whatever the morons at the local Applestore where peddling to go with Airports at the time. That blew in a couple of weeks, though the identical replacement has been fine for over a year now. There was some problem at the BT exchange that we got sorted at around the same time the first modem blew. I also cleaned up the connection to the BT box outside on which the cover had not been replaced properly and so it was full of damp and crap - cleaned it out and damp-proofed it - that may have played a role.

Cheers,

K.

Hi Rex,

So far so good with this Linksys, but its very early days.
I would say the Netgear is easier to setup for a beginner like myself, but the linksys isnt too hard really.

I have a Netgear router. The first one I bought wasn't compatible with the work's remote accessing system; so I got work to replace it with an older Netgear router and it works fine with my ISP, Hot Chilli and work. Been working fine now for 9 months w/o a problem.

I've never had any probs with Netgear, I like the way they autosense internet settings, I just set one up in a clients house 2 months ago and he has had no problems with it. Also Linksys or D-Link routers seem to be OK but only used them a few times. You probably just got a dodgy router, when I was working we used an SMC Barricade wireless router and it worked perfectly for 3 years with no problems. Like I said you were just unlucky with the kit.

Sitecom wireless base station (seem only Benelux sales) which is flawless but only in passthrough mode does none of the router tasks which is an 8 port SMC..

Had a lot of hassles with consumer routers (2 and 4 port jobbies) and even though they cost a bit more I have found the 8 port and up small biz type seem to be mroe resiliant..
