Microphone

I bought a mic in order to talk over the internet using googletalk. I've plugged it in and tried to talk to a friend in Cuba. I can hear her ok but she can't hear me, although at one point she said she could hear a voice that sounded like it was in a distant cave

It's a cheap mic bought from a computer shop. It does not have an off/on switch. I've plugged it in to the socket next to where the speaker lead goes, 'cos that's the only place it fits.

Anybody any idea what else I need to do. Control panel????

Cheers

Gez

I dont know why you have problems but I guess it is either not turned on/audio settings or faulty.

Many cheap webcams have inbuilt mic which easily capture the sound anywhere inside the room, instead of talking close to a cheap desktop mic.

And... I have been using Skype 2.0 myself recently, it works pretty good, like a phone with video (if you want) and you can show the video in full screen. Its free, give it a try.

It should not be plugged into the speaker socket !!!

On any soundcard you will have headphone and mic.. Headphones or speakers go on the headphone and mic to the mic.. I am guessing this is the issue..

Yes, haha, I had the same problem with my headset in the past, so I guess it is a common problem. I also bought a cheap desktop mic and used hi-fi headphones, it works but if you dont talk close to it people at the other end barely hear you.

The inbuilt webcam mic worked best for me.

You can always test your mic with the build in soundrecorder
Go Accessoires >> Entertainment >> soundrecorder

Thanks for this tip. Just tried it out and it is working OK. As Nicke says you have to be close to the mic for it to show any real volume.

The soundcard has 3 holes and the middle one is the only one that the speakers work on. I'm assuming that the other 2 must be input sockets???

I've swapped the mic to the other socket.

Has anyone got googletalk and willing to help me test it out

Please PM me if you do

Thanks

Line in (mic)
Line out (line level output)
Headphones out (think this is lower than libne level but never fully sure).

Problem is there is nothing to indicate line in and line out. The speakers only work in one hole (middle), so I assume the other two are line in. Mic for one and maybe line for the other.

Mate is going to lend me a proper mic, so I'll try that.
