Vista hardware requirements released

MS recently released the hardware requirements for Vista, and obviously they are well below what you would really need to run a decent system, but Winsupersite have a more detailed look at the requirements here

Will be one of the first to make the move over, but will also have a backup system for the inevitable grief I will get for being one of the first later this year.

Interestingly, I read recently that the reason Vista has been delayed is nothing to do with MS being late, rather the major PC vendors require more time to create their builds and go through testing. Dell have a 3 month turn around on every one of their updated builds! For a new OS, they'll probably need more.

Also, for anyone on Phuket, I can get hold of the latest Vista builds from MS if anyone is interested in taking a look sooner rather than later

Also the OEM's didnt want it to hit the market just before the christmas period, although the corporate version will be released in November. I wont be in a hurry to upgrade

Agreed, I will wait at least 18 months or 2 years to let folks like Syeatman iron out the problems and for a decent database to build up on windowsannoyances etc. before buying. There's no point in being a general if you don't let the infantry go in first...

Anyway 2 years is about the time when I'll be looking to buy a new portable and desktop systems, everything working fine at the moment, so no point changing yet.

ok, time to dig this thread up again.

MS have now released a Vista Upgrade advisor. You can download it and it will test your system to see if you are able to run Vista. It's still beta btw.

By the sounds of things all the hype about needing a brand new ultra spec machine is bollox. My laptop (9 months old, good spec HP Compaq) passed with flying colours, and is fine for the Aero UI with it's onboard graphics chip.

Currently downloading the just release Beta 2, and will have it running in a virtual machine tomorrow

I may have to give that a whirl..

Been holding off any upgrades while I wanted to see.. Looks like my laptop will scrape by (just) and some extra ram and GFX cards should leave desktops and Home Theater PC running fiine..

Thinking about this I'm not sure running it in a VM is going to cut it, HDD/RAM not an issue but getting Aero to run with what is an SVGA driver will be a no no, and from what I've read the standard UI is pretty crappy compared to even XP, will give it a go anyway and see what happens.

The best place to keep up to date with Vista IMHO is Paul Thurrot's WinSuperSite (probably mentioned it before). Has great reviews of all stuff MS, including XBOX stuff.

Another update I just got hold of is WMP 11, very nice indeed and pretty much what will be arriving with Vista. Have even signed up for the trial of the MTV/MS Urge service. Won't pay for it, but looks pretty good for people who use these kinds of services.
