calling all webmasters
doing some research at the moment to find the "best" hosting for a Phuket based/oriented website. Needs to be quick for Phuket obviously, but also and just as important needs to be good for US/Europe.
I am thinking Singapore off the top of my head, and have had similar answers already from elsewhere, just wanted to check with anyone on here if they have had similar decisions to make (yes Nicke that includes you too)

I have used us data centers without any noticable lag over other sites.. Plus they tend to be cheaper.

I've used a few us sites and they seemed to be awful, tho as you say cheaper...and some of the space/bandwidth packages are so cheap these days. Any particular recommendations??
I also need Apache/MySql/PHP so that will narrow down the options. Still digging around but need to make a decision soon.

I use US based servers, works fine for international audience and pretty good value. If my target was only Swedish people I would probably host it in Sweden.
Althought there are some bad operators out there, so you should try to find reviews before signing up.
A big plus if you can remote reboot your server, some companies dont have that and charge you a fee to restart your server. For me its a must have. I also have backup server on the same LAN for backup purposes. (10 USD for 10 GB if I remember correctly)
I pay 159 USD for this server/month with 1000 GB bandwidth.

I agree. I've used 1planhost in the US with no problems. Also, most Thai forums I am aware of (incl. this) is based in the US.
I think Phuketgazette was hosted from Singapore awhile back, but they now seem to have moved back to Bangkok.
EDIT: Oh I guess it also depends on what server technology you want to use. In terms of choosing the right company that is.

Yes he does, and you'd be crazy to host anything locally.

I was initially thinking Singapore but after reading a million and 1 reviews last night I have a choice of two left, and they are both US based.
What surprised me is the packgages that these guys are giving for peanuts.
I can get unlimited storage, 1000GB of bandwidth, 5 free domains, host 10 domains on single hosting plan with dedicated IP's, 500 subdomains, 100 DB's...all for 700Bt a month! It may not be a dedicated server but the option is always there if needed later for not alot more
Certainly changed since i last hosted sites.

Beware of using US servers if you are not (or even if you are) a US citizen, you will be exposing yourself to the reach of the US patriot act. This is risky particularly if you host content over which you have no direct control (forums, newsgroups even email routing). I have been looking recently at servers in the Americas to placate some whining about my Frankfurt server being 'too far away' (I know... these people (medics!) think the Internet still runs on telegraph wires ). There are some Canadian hosts who actualy advertise their datacentres as not being (directly) covered by the PA.
If you are a US citizen... you're fcuked whatever you do... they'll get you in the end
For that matter, examine the legislation of any country in which you base your server.
