ADSL - Chalong/Phuket City
Over the last 2 months my ADSL (LoxInfo) has got worse and worse - now seems to go down for over 2 hours every 2 or 3 days.
Anybody living in this area what are your experiences?? - I need a stable line - more important to me than speed.

2 elements make up your line speed.
The fist is you line quality.. Is your line dropping and the modem unable to connect ?? And if it is connecting in the advanced sections of the modem can you see your connection speed (may be down) or Db signal loss ??
The second is the ISP.. I have had a week of trouble with goldcyber but its 500kbps international today.. Also its cheap.

No problems LIL with line quaility - line is clean and no-problems with drop-offs when using emergency dial-up service.
I'm pretty sure problem lies with ISP ..... even when have a connection have at times been completly unable to access the web, sometimes when this happens I can still get Thai sites (BKK Post etc) but nothing outside Thailand. I'm sure all this filtering is slowing things down big time too.
At the moment I can't access MSN Messenger either ..... what a tech backwater this place is.
Done some searches thru some Blogs to see what problem with MSN is - appartently whole system been attacked ... was it really a good think Yahoo hooking up with MSN ..... probably not

Who is your ISP..
I have goldcyber and it had a rough patch (as the ISP as opposed to my line problems) earlier this year but now its not to be complained about.. Peak times I get around 400.. Low traffic times over 800.. All for 1000 baht per month.
I also have the MSN thing today.. Been since mid afternoon..

It just seems to be completely inconsistent across the island from reading on various forums. You cannot rely on either location or isp.
I was on CS Loxinfo (TOT line) in Patong, and though it was only a 256k connection, it was rock solid and in 9 months only ever went down with the power and unpaid bills from memory.
Now I am in Kata on a Hinet (CAT) 2MB package for 900Bt, and though it's blazing fast especially at this time of night, it is less dependable. I am a bit more remote now, and i don't know how far I am from the local exchange, but I do lose the connection several times a week for anything from 5 mins to an hour. I can put up with that.
My mate in Chalong (Land and House) just got adsl in and I told him to go through TT&T, but it seems only TOT lines were available, I am pretty sure he went through KSC and doesn't seem to have had major issues. Would highly recommend the Hinet package, if available to you, but there's no guarantee you'd get an identical service.

Those kind of outages have been VERY costly
The TOT exchange is less than 5km away from me - so should be able get good link there - its the ISP/international link that is most critical - I cant have outages.
Thanks for feedback Syeatman - here's hoping for some serious tech improvements on this island.

Have you considered multiple lines, multiple providers and a satellite connection to back them up

But its not the actual distance to the exchange, its the cable run distance which could be up to double the actual distance.
Thats one thing for sure that I dont miss from Phuket, the internet.

My buddy is on a TT&T Hinet.. Like stated blazingly fast when it works or naff.. His line has got worse lately and seems to be down a lot.
Basically if its any of the TOT or TT&T cheapos expect outages.. Mates missus is in a net cafe with a SME / Netcafe 2 MB connection for TOT and a TT&T backup line..

Not only the distance but the connections..
Finally threw in the towel on my old line after a year of argeing with the TOT (of course even though they admit it was thier line.. and admit they cant fix it.. I still have to pay for a new line connection fee)..
The old line had many many connections in old leaking boxes.. I am told the new one has only a couple of copper on copper connections between here and the exchange and its a new box just put in on Nanai.. We will see..

Cheers LiL - looks like I will have another go at getting a ToT line - as when they launched their ADSL service they were swamped here and wait list was 6 months out. Since having 2 TT&T lines already - one 'clean', the other must be one of the worst lines on earth - (I have to buy a new cheapy phone about once a month cos so many surges on it) - having yet another line - getting ridiculous.
My neighbor works senior position at TT&T and they are working on broadband for BKK - he's moving there !!! Even he cant figure whats going on with connection problems though.

TT&T has had lot of outages lately, it used to be very stable. 2 weeks ago it was down 4-5 times during MANY hours. Think one time was like 13-15 hours downtime.
I hope they corrected the faulty things now, as I have been happy with it. For you Kev, a backup line and having both TT&T and TOT is the way to go, I think, to minimize downtime.

Ok Nicke - cheers .... will go order ToT as I can't take these outages ... yesterday was another bad TT&T (or rather Loxinfo) outage for 3 hours (2.30pm - 5.30pm) - bad timing for me, and just don't see why the quality of service seems to get worse not better.
