Video editing software
We have any expert video editors around here? I know nothing about it and am trying to decide which software to use, something that is pretty powerful, but not too hard to learn...but I'm totally clueless!!

Nid Noy is your man. Try a PM to him. Sure to have a recommendation at least.

I'm sure that I will be shot down here, but here is what I use.
For short clips on the web, windows movie maker is pretty good. It's easy to use and feels familiar. You can't burn to disc from it though.
For making DVDs Nero is good, easy to learn and pretty powerful. If you are just using a regular PC then those two will probably fulfil your needs. Watch it with video clips too, you will fill your hard drive up quicker than you could ever believe.

Sony Vegas Video is excellent program, can be easy to use but still capable of doing lot of more advanced things.

Tell us more about what you want to do - and on what level. It is impossible to give a good recommendation with "pretty powerful" as the only request.

Nicke,
I am in the same boat as "mistermann", never used video editing software. I just bought a Sony High Definition HC3 camcorder. Some reports on CNET, I think, said Vegas Video could handle the HD editing. Have you used it with HD? I assume it can integrate audio?
Thanks

Ya I have downloaded the Sony software....seems fairly easy to use so far. But also has tons of stuff in it that I don't understand.
I want to basically take my digital footage and cut pieces out and assemble them with fade ins and outs, text overlay & credits, add music, and either just save to a file or create a dvd with chapters. I think it would be a fun thing to take a night class on, have to see if they have one in my hometown.
I am just curious to see what others on here are using, I've seen quite a few Thailand videos on youtube with decent editing, so I think some of the authors of those must be bm's here!

How do you like your high def cam? I'm thinking now that maybe that should have been the way to go, is this picture quality as much better as the demos they have set up in the stores imply??

Windows Movie Maker can do all the basic stuff but I dont think I was able to save as mpeg2 for eg. DVD creation?
But for internet movies it is good enough.

I know the OP said he was completely clueless, but sending him to see a mac-luser is beyond cruel
I use Powerdirector from Cyberlink, about GBP60 IIRC. There are lesser versions (magicdirector?) and you can download and try for free.

I just ordered it Friday so don't have it yet. I hope to hell I am more impressed with it than you were with the demo. I got it on the advice of an experienced underwater diver who owns an underwater photo/video shop in Los Angeles. He has just designed and made a prototype housing for the HC3.
We will see. I'll let you know when I have had time to experiment.

No, I meant to say that the HD picture quality in the demo was fantastic! So I'm wondering if the demo was a bit rigger or if the picture really will be that much better in real world conditions....let us know, I might try and do a trade in on mine.

The user that thinks its OK to pirate software. Whilst we are guilty of it at some stage, if I find something useful, I always pay for it.

On a more serious note, with the quality of open source software that is appearing these days, people might not need to be pirating software for much longer!

Hi, use windows movie maker 2.1, save the finished to your computer as a DV AVI, PAL, NTSC, or SECAM. This depends on where you live. PAL Australia, NTSC the US.
You then import this file to your DVD burner program.
Just follow the prompts 1, 2, 3.
enjoy

Exactly, even with Microsoft releasing the express versions of the individual VS components really surprised me, although not open source, but free to use.

While i always use adobe Premier Pro, which i think is the best program out there, but it has a very step learning curve and is quite expensive, I would recommend your tru out the Windows Movie maker, easy to use, and will give you clue of what your trying to do or use Sony Vegas Video, which is also and exellent program, and very easy to use.

I just received my new Sony HDR-HC3 High Definition camcorder yesterday. The best price I could find was, $1050 + $10 S&H USD. Read the manual and played with it for awhile. Hooked it up to my HDTV and all I can say is wow! To my untrained eye the playback was as good as what you see on HDTV. All I need now is video editing software and an iLink cable to transfer the video to my computer.
If you are interested in this camcorder please read on…
1. To my surprise this camcorder now comes with a few more included items not listed on any web site I visited. It comes with not one, but two batteries, a 128m memory stick DUO with adapter. For those that don't know, the memory stick DUO is a smaller version of the memory stick like the new mini-SD and micro-SD cards. The adapter allows the DUO to work with any normal memory stick slot. It also comes with a cleaning tape. Included items that are listed on the internet are a component video cable (R,B,G), A/V cable, USB cable and a remote control. The USB can only be used to transfer pictures from the memory stick in the camcorder which can take 4.0m pictures.
2. What it does not come with is any software, an iLink or HDMI cable. The iLink cable is the only cable which will allow you to transfer video to a computer. Yes, the camcorder does have connections for all five cable types mentioned.
3. The viewfinder is adjustable so no need for glasses to look through it.
4. I read where someone said the zoom was hard to control speed wise. I disagree; a light touch gives a gentle zoom.
5. It has two levels of inferred night vision, a modest night vision and super night vision 16 times more sensitive. I tried it; didn’t look 16 times more, but maybe the conditions weren’t right. As far as I know everything appears black and white with maybe a slight greenish tinge.
6. There is a “Smooth Slow Recording” which provides much better color in low light conditions, but the picture stutters when panning. This may only be good when there is little motion.
7. There is a slow motion feature that takes 3 seconds of video and plays it back in 12 seconds.
8. It is capable of fading in/out and some picture effects like sepia, B&W, reverse negative, solarizing, pastel and mosaic.
9. The LCD is a touch screen (works pretty slick) and menu's can be customized.
For anyone who is not a Videophile this HD camcorder should be all you could hope for. I have a bit more experimenting to do. Should be fun.

Sounds great, I just wonder, can you burn HDTV DVDs these days or how does it work?

hello nicke
Basic Steps for Creating HD DVDs:
1. Capture a high definition MPEG2 video to your computer.
2. Convert the video file from .ts, .tp or .m2t transport stream format to program stream format
3. Create an HD DVD folder on your computer
4. Burn the HD DVD disc using Nero Burning ROM.
