Backup Drive Question

Hey Guys,

For those techies out there..... HELP!

I recently purchased a Samsung 120G Smart Drive HDD for backup. It is a 2.5" USB 2.0.

I'm running Windows XP however when I connect the HD to my laptop by USB, the power shows but my laptop won't recognise it as a removable drive. It isn't recognising it at all.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers guys!

did it ever work ??

When you put the USB in does it show adding a device in the system tray area ??

Try click start -> run then type compmgmt.msc then click the disc management.. Can you now see the drive ???

OK.. First.. How are you powering it ???

Should have a power cable also (so as not to drain your lappy battery) or at a minimum you must plug in BOTH the dual head cables as the USB provides a low voltage and so it will need 2 USB ports to power a 2.5 inch enclosure (mine does anyway)..

Once its detected will probably need to be initialized and formatted using the 'manage' of my computer or the start run way there as above..

SUCCESS, SUCCESS!

This may sound stupid but I didn't know I needed to plug in BOTH dual head USB cables.

It is now recognising the HD.

Thank you very much for your help I know that 90% of the time it's user error.

Thanks again

Yep, some external USB2 hd need more power and thereby need two USB connections to get enough power, while other USB2 hd get enough power by only one cable.
