Wireless Router
I'm having murders setting up a Philips router. I want to hardwire the thing into my PC and use the laptop to share the connection. How hard can that be?
Has anybody any basic tips to help me along the way? I have a LAN connection, but I can't access the internet. When I try to run the software it just comes up with a 'failed' message and says check all connections.

Hmm I have had a few problems over the years with my wireless connection too. IIRC the first time I connected it, everything bar the actual connection worked. In the end I rang NTL and they guided me through it.
Basically, adding a router means another item of hardware has been connected to your server, and it is most likely not being recognised.
I would ring your ISP tech line and let them talk you through it Steve.
Also, in the case of my router, it did say specifically to install the software before plugging in the router.

I think that the problem is the computer not recognising the base station, though I'm not sure.
I actually rang Philips today, and althought they were helpful they couldn't solve it for me. I guess I will have to try BT on monday.

Did you give the router an IP part of the network?
Did you config your main computer to use that IP as gateway?
If you use DHCP, the router need to tell the other computers your network settings so that has to be correct. (Gateway, DNS, submask)

It should do Steve if you have installed and run the router software first.
Hmm,time to call in the professionals. Gez , what do you reckon?

It did not ask me for any settings. I'm thinking that there is some software missing because I can't see any settings for the base station.
I went to the Philips website to see if there were any drivers that I could download but had no luck.

You have definitely missed a setup point. What make and model of router is it.

Hey Steve,
It's a Philips SNA6500. The software is supposed to autorun, but it just comes up with an error page saying that there is a cable missing.
I can't see how there is a cable missing. I have the phone line connected to the ADSL port and one of the LAN ports connected to the PC. I can't see anywhere to change settings on the base station, so am wondering if that is the problem. Maybe the PC can't see it?

Initially to configure it, the router must be physically connected to the PC and the PC must be able to see it. If your ADSL modem is connected to your PC using a network cable then just unplug this from the modem and plug it into the router.
Until you achieve this nothing will work.

I think we need a bit more info here Steve...
What operating system are you using ?
Which computer are you having the problem with, i.e. desktop, laptop, both ?
Did your connection work previously before you tried to add a router ?
Does the desktop connection work alone (i.e. without the laptop being connected up) ?
I'm sure you've already got documentation, but just in case...
SNA6500

Sounds to me like your powering the router from the PC.. Ideally you should have the router and PC then connected (router / switch) to your ADSL modem (assuming ADSL is involved)..
Describe your network in detail ?? ADSL modem then what ??

Ok, here is the setup.
The guy at Philips told me that the router replaces the modem (BT voyager 105 modem), so my setup at the mo is:
Phone line into ADSL port on the router base station. One of the LAN ports is then hard wired into the PC.
For the moment, my intention is hardwire the PC and wirelss for the laptop to share the connection. The PC is running windows XP. There is a base station icon on the desktop and when I double click it, the PC tries to navigate to the base station via a web browser (IE7).
I then get an error message and this is what makes me think that the PC can't see the base station.
I do get a LAN connection, but no internet access.

ok.. Is the wireless router also an ADSL modem ?? I would have guessed not and in that case you need to keep your modem in the mix..
Try phone line.. ADSL modem.. Cabled to wireless router (in).. Cabled to desktop..
Then go to network settings and either diable enable your LAN connection or double click, then support tab, then click repair.. This is to pick up a IP from the DHCP..
Any joy ??

I'll give that a whirl, thanks.
There's been real conflicting advice about the modem and I'm a little confused. I will try it back in the mix.

Your wireless router may not be a modem as well. When I tried to upgrade with BT, they sent me a wireless router and a modem - very confusing. Decided not to go with that option and I am now with Sky and they sent me a modem which is also a wireless router, i.e. just one box - nice and simple
It does sound like Sefton is right and that you need to add the modem back into the mix, at the right point of course.

Your router is a modem and router combo so no worry there.
Go to the status page of your router. How to do that depends on the ip address of your router but enter that ip address in the addressbar of your router.
Here you will find the setup for your router. make sure you have all those settings correct. Don't know the BT settings but I would guess you would have those written down somewhere. What provider are you using?
Technically if your router is setup correct you will be able to browse with your wired pc. Then setup your wireless in the same status page to setup your laptop also.
things to look for when setting up your router
PPPoA or PPPoE
VPI/VCI depending on provider but something like 0/38
encapsulation probably VC-Mux
username and password
IP obtain automatically
DNS obtain automatically
just a check for your page can not be displayed problem to make sure it is the connection:
Go to your dos prompt (command prompt) and type ping 212.58.224.86
if this gives 4 packets send and 4 recieved your connection is working
then try ping www .bbc.co.uk
if this does not give 4 packets send and recieved 4 then you have to set your dns servers manually on your pc and you will be able to browse.
And lets not forget the many problems with IE7

Thanks Erik. Actually, I was just going to post what a royal pain in the butt IE7 is, I really wish I had not accepted the download.
Router wise, when I type the IP address into the browser it comes up with page not found. That's part of the reason I think that there may be some software missing, the PC can't find the base station.

OK then your not getting the IP address by DHCP (automatically) perhaps DHCP isnt set up..
When you open the browser what IP does it try for (usually a 192.168.0.xxx range ??) if so then manually set you IP address in network properties to an ip within that range (subnet 255.255.255.0) so that you can then hit the routers config..
From there you need to set up DHCP and your modem settings / pass etc..

The IP address was a 682.2.1 and I came from the manual. Where do I find the network settings?

control panel - network settings then choose your LAN if theres a few.. Lots of other ways to get to this screen also, via 'my network places' and looking at top left for network connections..
What you have posted isnt a full IP address (4 sets of up to 3 digits).. Also a highly unusual range for a private network..

Sorry, should have posted the whole IP I've been trying. As Erik says, it's 192.168.2.1
Will have another try tonight.

go to start, run and then type cmd
type ipconfig and see what the ip address of your pc is (should be like 192.168.2.???) should also show gateway is 192.168.2.1
if not go to the network connection, right click on your NIC and choose properties. Go to the TCP/IP and properties of that. Either DHCP is not selected and should be turned on or set ip manually at 192.168.2.3 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0
this should allow you to go to the router page and maybe you turned of dhcp in the router (should be turned on) You might also just start with a factory reset (hold the reset button for 30 seconds I guess) and reboot it all.
That way your router should be reset to 192.168.2.1 and dhcp enabled if you have messed up the settings
