Anti Virus
Now that we got my router working, thanks everyone for help, I want to know if I can use one anti virus subscription for both computers?
I have no AV software on the laptop so am really wary of using it on the internet. I use PC Cillin on the PC and it seems reliable, but will they want me to pay two subscriptions?
Oh, and I tried a search, no luck

Yes you can. I use Nortons and that allows 3 installations with a single license, so I'm sure some of the other cheaper solutions would allow the same or greater.

I doubt you'll find anywhere which states how many times you can install something on a single license. Just try it, it will more than likely just work for you. Sorry buy not too familiar with your product.

While on the subject, I removed a copy of Norton Internet security from daughters old laptop which still had 200+days to run.
After I downloaded a copy back onto the new PC when I came to put in the old product key, I was told it had been used on too many PCs, or words to that effect, and wouldn't licence my copy.
I wrote to Norton, who told me hard luck, buy a new copy, so Im stuffed.
The original copy was put on the PC by a repairer who sorted the laptop out when it malfunctioned early this year. I paid full price and got no installation CD.
I have been ripped off haven't I?
Sorry if I hijacked your thread Steve.

Sounds like the repairer used his own install. Just buy a renewal license, and that will give you 3 more installs of it, while your at it upgrade to the newer version for a small bit extra. I renewed mine a few months ago, I think it cost me AUD$130 for 2 years.

Good idea. Is the 2007 version any improvement on 2006? Any extra features for instance. I do think its a pretty comprehensive security for emails and browsing, especially using ad aware/spybot as well. At least for a home system anyway.

Not sure about the 2007 version I'm using the 2006 version, but I would upgrade for sure. Using Nortons you pay a premium, but it works and is reliable. These days you need to know it is protecting your PC.

I wont put Norton products on any machine I own.. Thier disk tools and basic stuff used to be great in the mid 90's but thier AV stuff hogged and broke machines for me..
AVAST is free for non commercial (I think AVG is stopping being free this year) and keeps me virus free..

I've heard similiar comments from others as well, but I've never had any issues. Touch wood.

First of all, Happy New Years to all BMs!
Am using Avast for years and the free home version is quite reliable and easy to use

I used to use the free Avast antivirus on my old PC and had no problems.
As long as you download the updates regularily, same as any anti virus, it does a decent job.
I have to ask myself why Im paying for Norton, when there are so many free anti virus programmes available, and I suppose I would say after using the 60day free trial on a new PC, I was impressed with the ease, and the functions it has, so paid for the year.
AVG seems to be another popular choice for free anti -virus software.
Its all a matter of choice I suppose, as long as your choice does the job.

I am using Norton on this computer, but only because I got 90 days free with the purchase of the computer. Every time I boot up, I get a message that says Norton is unable to run an update. So what good is it? I think AOL probably set up a firewall which is blocking Norton's updates. AOL's premium subscription includes an AV program, so they want to get the business for themselves. But I am definitely 86-ing Norton when the freebie is up and probably AOL, too, since I think they both suck.
New computers with the latest chips seems to do OK with Norton, but if you have an older model they hog up way too much capacity and slow the computer down to a snail's pace. My friend who uses Norton got a a virus(Fundo-V) that the Norton program couldn't handle, and it trashed her computer. We contacted Symantec, and they emailed her the fix instuctions to get rid of Fundo-V. We carefully followed the instructions to a T, and each time it got rid of the virus(according to Norton), and the computer functioned normally. However, the virus was able to hide in the boot files, and every time she booted up anew, it was back again, like an old friend you just can't get rid of!! She was ready to hire an expensive expert to handle it, but I said, "Let's give AVG a shot at it first. Running the computer in the safe mode, we downloaded and ran the AVG scan. Worked like a charm. And with Norton disabled, her computer wasn't so damn slow anymore. A month later, I was over there, and we get on her computer, and it is running like shit. I see the Norton icon, and ask if she is running Norton again, and she says yes. Why? Well, because it is supposed to be the best, of course, and it does so much more for you than just scan for viruses, says she. Yeah, like make your computer run slow as molasses in January, says I. She is still using it and her computer still works like crap, so yesterday she said she is getting a new computer.
I use both Antivir and AVG on my other computer. Both are free. They fought at first, but now they seem to get along OK. I rarely have had a problem, but the couple times I have, I just make sure my programs are updated, then ran full scans with both, then it was fixed.

Looks like you're unable to run LiveUpdate. If you post the exact message, I might be able to help you with that.

A Boot sector virus is seldom these days and belongs to the older categories of virus attacks. Your Norton AV should have no problems with it. Guess you got some bad luck with the customer services suggestions.
Also JB, I've seen in some previous posts of yours that you are/have been running 2 different versions of AV on one PC believing in sort of double protection. Are you still doing this ?

Running 2 AVG programs simultainiously is never a good idea.. They both want access and control to the disk.
AVG stops being free soon.. Other than AVAST (Which I am happy with) I dont know of any other free and well maintained and updated AV soft.

Not only disk, but mainly access to memory and processes which clash.
It's a classic misconception from home users seen all too often.
Subsequently, complains about performance issues, BSOD etc.
On another note, Norton AV by itself does not impact performance
that badly. If there are performance issues, it's for a technical reason, being it misconfigurations, a corrupt definition set or even 2 different AV prog's on one PC as mentioned above, etc.
As for not identifying a virus, you can safely say that NAV has been and still is leading
the top in all tests compared with other AV programs. You can check those results
here: http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/index
I do agree if you install the complete Norton System Works suite, this can have quite an impact.
As for the free AV programs, you have to bare one thing in mind. Can they guarantee to deliver a new set of definitions on time, do they have the infrastructure to deliver this worldwide ? Companies like Symantec or McAfee have Security Response Centers around the Globe analyzing continuesly new security threads 24/7 and deliver protection on time. Can free AV programs deliver this service ? I don't think so.
Another plus worth considering Norton AV is that spyware protection is included within the Autoprotect feature and checks for spyware in real-time.
So you don't need to have a seperate Spyware program, where most of them only scan on demand (that is if you launch a scan manually).

my reply on the "poll" thread:
"I dumped Norton after it repeatedly failed to stop and/or find viruses on my PC. It also slowed my PC down a lot.
I switched to AVG and have had no problems and it found and cleaned up viruses that Norton failed to spot.
The other one with the best reputation is Kaspersky"
I didn't realise that AVG was no longer going to be free tho' I will pay because it is good.
Unlike Jaybee, I certainly wouldn't run 2 antivirus progs on the same machine.
