disc space
I have a 74.4GB hard disc. There is currently 9.45 GB of free space.
2 GBs taken up with photos, 17GB with vids and about 1GB with other stuff.
So does this mean that the software is taking up 45Gb of hard disc?
I want to free up some space, but cannot find where storage is being used up.

You proberly have split it in multiple partitions.
Check your disk manager for that: Ctl-Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Managememt.
How many partitions do you see and how much is free ?

Okay, then you have more stuff on that disk than you think you have.
Your looking for 44 GB of data which must be somewhere indeed.
Try the following steps. First run Disk Cleanup and let it finish. It will take a while but it will find a whole bunch of unused compressed files on your disk and remove them. (Right Click your C: drive - Properties)
Next I would search your C: drive for files larger than i.e. 1024 KB.
Check the results and see if the data is at the expected location. Maybe a folder or files pops up which you didn't check before. (Right click C: drive, Search - Specify size - at least 1024KB)
Just in case to have that covered, empty your recycle bin

Since you have still 10 GB space left, there's no hurry to run this now unless your currently downloading 9 GB ? ;-)
Let it all finish and run it overnight.
If you don't have the "Recycle Bin" icon on your desktop you'll find it listed in "Windows Explorer". I believe below "My Network Places".

uninstall unneeded programs
Go into "Control Panel" from your start menu.
then
"Add or Remove Programs"
then
"Sort by: Size"
then
click on a program you don't need.
then
"Change/Remove"
then
delete that program and data
repeat

Hi SirGezza,
I would think it highly unlikely that you have up to 30GB of material hidden on your PC you don't know about. I reckon UB2U is correct and your disc is partitioned into two sections , Drive C and Drive D.
Try clicking on "My Computer" from your desktop screen and looking at Hard Disc Drives. I think you will find two, and your second drive will be empty, and having at least 30GB unused

There is less than 2Gb used here, so I'd rather not delete anything, just incase it's important.
I'll do a disc clear-up when the download finishes.

saving disk space
Hey SirGezza
Since you have a DVD writer you can burn all the Vids and photos on a DVD
and delete the original thus saving a disk space up to 18 GB.
The Temp files maybe holding a lot of unnecessary data which sums up alot
especially from the downloads and the Windows Prefetch files.
I recommend to download "Absolute Shield Track Eraser " which will clean your HD and save a lot of space.
Just google it to download the software.

Have you found the recycle bin yet? if not Right click on the start button & choose Explore all users & you will see it where ub2yoo said it is OK, also after running disk cleanup do a disk defrag, you will find that in system tools just under disk cleanup it will also take a while so do it when your not using the pc (let it run over-night) it should help speed up your pc... hope this helps...

have you checked the dirty pics folder? another 10GB?
If the exclusive goal is to gain disk space try the "Format C:" command

i take it when you download with bit-comet you save to the default folder! try to make new folders each time you download & delete them after burning to cd/dvd, also if you know any1 in IT see if they can install Partition Magic on your system & then you`ll be able to have music, movies & pics on seperate drives........
