Norton 360
I have just paid for, and installed this new product, supposed to be an upgrade for Norton Internet Security, and its the biggest pile of trouble I have ever downloaded.
The previous programme. Internet Security 2007 worked fine, no drain on the system and no trouble whatsoever. But 360 is giving me all sorts of issues with internet connection. Each page on this site needs refreshing at least twice (showing the dreaded Page not Available) and I can't work it out.
I have turned off the firewall, no difference, I have turned off Windows firewall, same same.
They have a useless support programme that checks the system, and they tell me I have issues with my wireless connection, but its fine. Two other laptops are using the connection with no problems at all
I am going to disable the whole programme now and see if it makes any difference, and if it does, I will email Symantec and find out what is going on.
After this product was praised in UK PC mags, and my previous good experiences with Norton, Im disappointed with this software and can't recommend it at all

Just uninstalled this piece of crap, and the PC is running fine again.
What a waste of $55US
Using AVG Anti virus now along with Ad-Aware and Spybot. Only thing not covered is spam. I'll find another free programme for that somewhere.
Bye Bye Norton

Would recommend also running SpywareBlaster.
Haven't used AVG for a while but when I did, I found it would let the virus in and then detect it, I use Avast which I find better (also free).
For email spam I use mailwasher which lets you view/delete/bounce messages before downloading them to your email client.

That's what I hear all the time from the "old" geeks ;-)
Yet, Norton is bringing in millions year after year....but I see where you come from.

That's because of a new feature which is suppose to protect you from "Identity theft".
It checks whether the website you do your business on, ie. your home banking, is indeed the correct site where you enter your personal details.
I've heard it slows down, then again, security always comes with performance issues (compare it to airport check-ins).
There's the option to disable this feature but I guess it's too late now for you since it's already uninstalled.
PM me if you have trouble getting your money back, I might know some ppl I can talk to.

Oh I can re- install it anytime ub2yoo. Can also put it on another two PCs for the same price, which was one of the features that attracted me to it.
But the number of error reports it was giving along with "Page unavailable" and complete internet crashes was sending me wild. I did disable the "fraud website" feature and it made no difference.
Im waiting for Symatec tech support to reply and see what they suggest. But I wish I had just renewed Norton Internet Security 2007. A far more stable and workable piece of software IMO.

555555555 I just put Avast on one of the laptops. Used to use it myself, but thought I'd try AVG and see how it coped. I had better look in on some pron sites and test it out
Forgot about mailwasher Steve. I had that years ago on a Windows 98 PC. Pretty effective too.
I'll have a look at spywareblaster too. Thanks for the recommedations

there is not much bouncing spam as the address are spoofed (so some poor person gets all the crap bounced). Not sure if Outlook can do this but thunderbird email program can download the headers of a email (saves you d/l all the email that could be junk) all the legit stuff, you just have to click on the d/l email link
I've found Norton has always been crap

If Outlook can't download email headers, it must be a pretty poor mail program, but I think it's quite popular, so it can download email headers, what do you think ?

Hmm, never ever had a problem with their products since I first used them in 98. Its only this latest piece of software 360 that is giving problems.

BTW Dawsey, I've got a new stat for you, since N360 has been launched end of March, more then a million copy's have been sold. It beats NIS2007 in that number so far. And it's just the beginning.
Very well there are problems, but they get sorted and this is the next generation going forward.
Not that I use it privatly, just some facts 5555

Reading some of the comments on the link Petter posted, it makes me wonder if Norton rushed this product out too soon and before ironing out obvious faults. To me, it behave like a beta copy

That's really no surprise. Especially in the consumer space, the go to market pressure is quite high, to win the race against competition is key.
360 is in direct competition with MS OneCare, that's priority.
There are ton's of niche players in that market, although they can't provide that massive service as Symc or MS, they are there but only can provide a micro piece of a complete solution. Some do AV, some Spyware, some Spam filtering, some phishing protection, some on-line storage, but they are not capable to provide the complete solution.
So, 360 vs OneCare it is now, further down the road, it will raise the bar overall for all end-user vendors. That's how it always has worked in the consumer space. They are driving technology at a very fast pace.
It's a different story in the Enterprise business. They wait and watch what consumers are doing and adapt new technology once it has been tested and is more mature, then they are going to implement it.
The cylce continues and the consumer market is pushing new technology and it all repeats itself.
You can be a proud member of the consumer space pushing our Global Technology forward 5555

had on my parents computer (1997-98 I think) as it was OEM software and it made the computer run slowly and the uninstaller was rubbish. Heard other people that have purchased it because it was No. 1 selling product and hated it. After trying other software they have never got back to norton. (anti-virus and firewalls etc)

well I have used outlook in ages because I have a old version but know outlook express can't do it and some people call outlook express - Outlook
Also Thunderbird has a wide range of extensions and themes (99.9% free) which are very useful

Quick update on Norton 360.
After uninstalling it, and using AVG / Ad Aware/ Spybot I was still having internet dropouts. I have a cable broadband with Linksys wireless router supplying my desktop and 3 other laptops in the house.
I rang the broadband supplier (Virginmedia) and they came last week to replace the box and a seperate new modem. I have now configured it all, and the internet is stable.
So I thought I'd try Norton again
Reinstalled this afternoon and its a piece of crap
Absolutely nothing but trouble, even with internet security turned off, firewall off I couldn't connect to Outlook Express. Connection to the internet dropped every 10mins, and the pages loaded really slowly even after a reboot of the router and modem.
Well its had its last chance. Uninstalled it again, and all is fine
I have never come across a piece of so called PC protection software that is so abysmal in its faults. Norton have lost another customer for good.
