I just purchased a new notebook from Dell, taking delivery tomorrow. I was considering the XPS series. I told the Dell rep that my application would be heavy business use, including office, PowerPoint as will as Illustrator, PhotoShop and AutoCAD. The Dell rep advised against it; he said only to pick this computer (XPS) if the main use is multimedia and gaming.

Which one did you take? If for biz, i will take the Latitude D630.
XPS specs seem to be towards gaming, but it's still a notebook. To me the XPS is light and good for mobile users.

I have had D610 and D620 before, both good. This time I picked the D830; for the most part loaded to the max.

Since you're doing Illustrator, PhotoShop and AutoCAD, i would have taken the XPS since it's using a nicer graphics card.

I did get the best graphics card available for the Dimension. AutoCAD is mainly to review files, I will be doing no ME work. Illustrator/PhotoShop are only moderately graphic intense.
Actually the final deciding factor (besides the recommendation from the Dell rep) was the choice of pointing device. The XPS only features the TouchPad, which I hate. The Dimension series also features the TrackPoint (or as I call it - Keyboard Clitoris). I use the keyboard for better than 90% of navigation and the KB Clitoris serves me well when I need to use it.

I prefer just the keyboard whenever posible.
When I talked withe the Dell rep, I did not remember the trade name TrackPoint and I told him that I wanted the Keyboard Clitoris. He had to put his phone on mute. It was almost 30 seconds before we could continue with business.

Not since I had a T1900 in the early 90's.
Personally I have had so much success with Dell that I have no intentions of going elsewhere. Between myself and my staff I have bought (leased) over a hundred of them. The company I just departed had over 1000 Dell note books in service.

I hear good stuff bout Dell Biz range notebooks, but not their home/consumer range.
Am currently using HP/Compaq Biz range, IMHO they are overpriced.

Last year, I purchased the XPS 1210, and have been very happy with the performance, and "travelability".
(it's also nice to see, that it is probably obsolete, by now...5555)
I also run the Dell XPS 410 desktop, at my home. Very nice, and no problems.
