facebook.com
I've been aware of this site for a few years. I didn't pay much attention as I thought it was for university students. Recently a few friends had sent requests asking for me to join. Given all the other hype of be reading, I gave it a go.
It actually is a very well done site. It is kind of like a friend management site. You can post photos, videos, events, and so on. It is like a hyper blog that auto updates your friends and sends you updates on them.
It is quite cool. I've been lazy to add people. Apparently you need over 30+ linked "friends" to reach critical mass of coolness. But I do like it. It is worth checking out.
BTW, there are 100+ groups about phuket. There isn't one yet for the MTB. Obviously will leave the honor of setting that up for Nicke. There are some other Patong bars that have their own groups.
What do you think about facebook?

At first that is what I thought. It is of course similar but very different.
Myspace pages are public. They are also very cluttered and busy. It is a lot more of a look at me thing.
Facebook is much cleaner. It is not always available to the public. Most people set it up so your stuff can only be seen by your friends. The people using it are mostly uni kids and professionals.
Facebook also does a cool job of updating stuff. For example last night one of my friends uploaded some pics from her mobile phone. This morning my "mini-feed" let me know about those photos and shows linked thumbnails.
It is worth playing around with. It will only get better as the site is more open for development. You can add little apss to your page. For example I have a google map showing all the cities of the world that I've visited.

Its amazing, I signed up when this thread was first posted but then forgot about it. Now I have started using it again and got in touch with old friends and family members, and the features and possibilities are impressive as 3rd part developers can create add-ons.
The best web 2.0 application I have seen, and with the growing rate I guess I can find a lot more old friends in the future.
I am sure this will be a VERY BIG THING in the near future.

I am unsure about the fact of being findable.. And also the interlinking of compartmentalized parts of my life..

Its not so easy to find people with common names without a clear photo, and with no other public details that may make sense.
The privacy is good, only approved friends can view, and you can edit yourself how much you want to allow others to see.

Must admit that facebook is worth a little of your time - especially useful for keeping in touch with friends and family abroad and sharing photo albums.
I just find the constant requests to join groups and write on walls (that you have to install) a little annoying.

I think it was the WSJ recently that valued this little baby at $US13 billion.

In that case, don't join as it is extremely good at doing what you are not interested in. You could go with an alias and have a limited circle of friends, but that really isn't the point.
Also been enjoying Rob's pics

The 23-year-old founder of Facebook is no doubt riding a little higher knowing that his popular social-networking site is valued at $15 billion, according to Microsoft Corp., which invested $240 million for a 1.6 percent stake on Wednesday.

Don't know the details so I am shooting darts here ...
... It may not be the site that has any value, but the technology.
Not too long ago 3M purchased one of my competitors; a small and less significant competitor. Price tag 4 times normal earning multiplication factor in our business.
Within 6 months the company was shut down with no trace of it ever existing .... except ... they owned a technology that was hardly marketable in our industry, but it was of huge value to 3M.

Was a warning yesterday in Swedish paper that when you sign up, you give facebook the rights to your photos and content, and that most people is not aware of the agreement they agree to when signing up.
Something to be aware of.

Facebook tech isn't exceptional. Some of the PHP code leaked and there were no big secrets.
It is basically an advertising deal.
You are right on the rights ownership. A lawyer friend of mine finds that strange as they then take on liability.

Its ok, he's a friend now.
Still, I have no plans of using the site really. Just want to have a friend I have actually met before.
