sending huge files via email.
this is a handy bit of software i stumbled upon. Sendago - Send big files easy and free
it allows you to send whole films via email. you upload your film to a server then mail the link to reciepiant, then they download.
i've just done the new kevin costner film "mr brooks"...took 45 mins.

WinSCP
The title of your post is a little misleading. Emailing anything over a couple of hundred kilobytes is problematic. My solution is to WinSCP (a secure ftp app) to my server then, as you say, provide the link. The service you found does exactly that but stores the files on their servers and does the link manipulation in the background.
It has been rumored for years that Hotmail simply nukes large attachments, this to save bandwidth. Any ISP, free or otherwise, is going to come down on you if for instance you try to email vacation videos.
OTOH, you can just burn a CD and snail it to whomever. I host about twenty websites on my own server for about $700/year. The advantage is that it is my beast, I run anything I want thereon, and I control the total environment. I also run an email server which got hijacked-- hundreds of thousands of spam messages. Got sloppy. Installed greymail and now I am off the various bounce lists. These little details keep you on your toes.

To me George's solution sound perfect as most do not have their own domain/ftp site. Besides a few 100kB should not be a problem; the average picture today is over 1MB. I routinely email files up to 30MB and rarely have problems and if I do it is usually the file extension (i.e. .exe or .zip).

Not sure what you mean by "own server". If you pay for hosting, it seems expensive. I have 10 sites hosted with 1/3 Terabyte of space and 3.5 TB of monthly bandwidth for $84 per year.

Get that for which you pay.
On "my server" I host nine adult sites, nine online poker sites, and three "others." In the online commercial arena it is best to stick with ISPs optimized for the complications. IOW, adult-industry ISPs. I have tried the cheaper alternatives but... it is far too expensive. Downtime, bandwidth throttles, and restrictions such as no email servers and lax security monitoring.
Perhaps I could run things better-- even approach your standards-- but the solution I have iterated to over the past 12 years finally works.
But let's keep this thread focussed.
For those who seek not "their own server" there exists another alternative. Set up a server on you own machine-- apache/php/MySql are all free-- then place the upload files in an accessible directory. Determine your PC's IP address then send the file URL (which includes that IP address) to whomever, then let them download from your PC.
ISPs may or may not have policies on this. However, it is not hard to stay under their radar since in network terms the bandwidth is low. Once your buddies have gotten the files you can shut down the server. This has the advantage of keeping your private files, private.

Not being aware of the type of sites you are hosting, you solution may be just right as many hosts frown on adult specific sites.

98% of the Internet users wouldn't have a clue as to how to setup their own computer as an SQL server.

Lots of free FTP servers you can download and run to host your own movies, with a modem it was easy but these days you also need to config NAT in your ADSL modem/router, I guess.
In Thailand I dont have my own IP, so not suitable here, but I have my own server in US thought.
