Free WiFi Internet - Patong
Can we have an updated thread on free WiFi Internet Access points in Patong? (or have I already missed it. I'll edit this message as reports arrive...
One more good freebie added 20-08-2005.
1) Obviously, MTB - but only in evening when the electricity supply is on. Haven't tried it yet.
2) Subway opposite Savoey, Beach Road. Not run by Subway, but the best place to get an Iced coffee and surf. I suspect it's running from the hotel/Internet cafe further inside the same building. 54Mbps, strength very good in Subway. Iced coffee large 80THB or you can hang around the arcade for free (bring own chair )
3) Rios, top of Bangla - Althought they have PCs free for customers ("please limit time to 20 mins"), the WiFi mentioned by Stickman is not in evidence.
4) Savoey Hotel, Beach Road. This is a secured network - maybe for guests? Has anyone stayed there and been given the WiFi key? Post it here....
5) Ocean Plaza has three unsecured networks (101,202,203) - but no connectivity and I haven't the battery power to hang around and crack them.
6) K-Hotel, Rat-U-Thit Road, secured WiFi, visible for some distance.
7) "Wireless" - An unsecure connection visible near Bangkok Bank near corner of Rat-U-Thit and Soi C&N. 11Mbps, limited connectivity.
8) "Basecamp" - Thai Basecamp Guest House, up the soi leading to Royal Paradise Hotel, one block North of Soi C&N; 54Mbps, reception excellent for a couple of blocks in some directions. Several cafes in range, including the hotel's own.
9) "Wireless" - Royal Paradise Hotel, 11Mbps, unencrypted but browsing requires username/password - anyone got? Good day reception as far as Rat-U-Thit
Any more anyone? Hotel network encryption keys etc?

Patong Bay Garden Resort opposite Savoey, close to Subway and Boots has WiFi. I've seen the router in the lobby. Don't know if secure or not.

Starbucks on the beach road should have, but I think they charge a small fee for access.
2 yeasr ago I could access internet outside one internet cafe on Nanai, I just discovered it when I ate at a restaurant there.

Starbucks almost certain;y, but not for free - looking for deliberate or accidental freebies

Burisari Inn on Soi Holiday Inn. No key needed. Not a guest friendly hotel though. Probably could pick it up outside the property but I've only tried it from the rooms.

With this new multi mile wireless I have been reading about (WiMAX) coming onstream soon I can really see room for a wireless ISP in patong..
Sort out some bandwidth.. Make sure you have multiple upstream providers for reliability.. WiMAX out over patong with access codes.. Low startup costs (relatively) and being such a tourist destination I think the market for the service (pre pay broadband) would be huge..

free wifi
I found that almost all of the patong area is hot, and free.
I had no touble getting free wifi on most parts of the patong.
I just turned it on, and 90% of the time, it comes up "SMC" connection, it connects no worries.
Give it ago.

The palm view hotel on Nanai has a fast hotspot thats wide open.. Can sit in offshore if you have a strong Rx card and also the little bakery over the road..

The restaurant SOFA on Rat-u-tit has free wifi for customers, comfy seats and power outlets too. When i used it, the internet was good and fast for a while then just stopped working...

Same here, want to give Pacific a go, but worried that it will be worse than I've got, which to be honest is not that bad, rarely goes down. Was hoping that connections back to Europe would be quicker as I VPN in to boxes in UK.

I have pacific now but provided on the TOT 1000 baht 1Mb package.. They actually sent me a new years gift to upgrade me to cyberbiz (1Mb but less contention cost 2700 IIRC) from goldcyber at no extra costs (squeeky wheel I think.. I call the tech guy every time it goes down just to remind him how often that is ) but its no different than before IMHO..
I had been told that pacific were going to have a direct to Singapore link and avaoid the CAT bottleneck but then I have since been told the Thai Gov wouldnt let that happen.

Faulty Towers in Soi Sunset now has wireless access but you have to put in the DNS servers in your network settings they are posted on the PC in the bar.
LIL - the router is a cheapo one even putting the DNS into the router won't work tried it yesterday, maybe works with wireless but certainly doesn't work with the ethernet connection to the router.
We'll see how it goes I guess.

Mike see the other thread abou FT going High Tech - the DNS problem has been solved just boot your laptop up and connect your wireless up, as both Simobo & myself have said it worked twice last night so methinks no probs.
See you Friday mate
