Who needs another IM?
Google, the new pain in the ass on the Internet.
Do a search on "google bans cnet" or look at http://www.google-watch.org/
One thing we really don't need is another monopoly.

One reason why google talk is interesting (and you should like this burg) is google are supporting open standards..
So they are using a SIP phone solution for talk and basing thier IM on jabber.. If you know about Gizmo which is an IM and phone VoIP application then you will be aware that this solution is already linking US college campuses, hardlinbe numbers, SIP hardware phones etc.. With googles massive input into the field this may go a long way to unifying the IM and VoIP space..
I have long been a skype fan.. That in turn has had me playing with SIP phones and technologies to test but quite frakly once I got my parents, non techie mates, brother, etc all to use Skype (they all love it BTW) getting them to install and more importantly configure the ports for SIP phoneing was a bridge to far.. With luck Google talk (using gizmo for me) will solve these issues and get them on an open standards system..
Click here to read 'Micheals minute' on the issue.. He is the guy behind Linspire and many many other open source projects (including gizmo)..

Does this mean free telephone calls between two people on ''Google Talk''?
How does it work - the Scottish and Yorkshire BMs will be interested

Time will tell. I only thought it was a messenger like the OP stated, but if it's a Skype competitor (I use Skype also daily for quite some time), then every initiative in that direction is welcomed. Skype is closed as hell, and Burg doesn't like that ;-). Still, very reserved about Google moves by the way. Google Earth only available for W. If they produce an open source version for Linux then I will probably say "Google is Ok".

I'm hopeless with computers, but assume you must have a microphone plugged in. How do you contact the other person and arrange a talk? What is the ''host'' or intermediary that enables the chat link to occur? A normal conversation on a phone involves dialling a number.

You both install skype..
Yes you need a mic but many laptops have a built in one (but much better performance with a mic or headset of headphone and mic)...
You then have a contact list showing if you are both online or away etc.. Just press the green dial button and thier computer 'rings'..
Conference calls are really handy a my ex biz partners are Iceland / Holland / UK with me here.. all 4 of us on the same call for as long as we need..

Skype clearly p1sses all over the MSN talk system (voice not text)..
As long as your net connection is stable and not too slow its clearer than most long distance phone calls I get.. Skype also has a video chat application from the same people using the same technology..
I dont have any google talk contacts so not tested thier talk systems.. SIP is a pretty advanced system and as far as I can tell has probably the best chance for an open format..
For the chat stuff i also run trillian.. Kind of a babelfish of the chat world.. Can have MSN / ICQ / AOL / AIM / IRC / Jabber / Etc all at once and talk from one system to another.. Also is an IRC client and is pretty damn cool.. Its just the extra features of MSN and the fact that 90% of my mates all use it that keep me coming back to it.. Trillian has a slick interface and look tho..

Yes, I never managed to get MSN work for voice chat, but Skype works fine. I use Skype to keep in touch with my parents in Sweden.
I installed Google Talk but havent really tested it yet, no contacts there.
