Ipods are mp3 players. They also come in photo versions for storing pictures. They have 3 basic model types. Low End - Shuffle, Mid Range - Mini, and High End - standard Ipod.
The Shuffle is the smallest model but is not quite as small as some of the other mp3 players geared towards sports uses. I think the largest is the Ipod Photo with 60 GB of storage.
Personally I chose the mini since I like to have enough room for music for long bike rides and I sometimes use it in the car, and it was much cheaper for me than the standard Ipod, and also smaller. I paid $150 for the 4G model here in the US back in May.
I think the prices are pretty universal unless you buy them used or opened. I saw the shuffle for 4000 baht in Bangkok last time I was there which is exactly the same price as it was here at the time.

Lol...
It is a popular handheld MP3 player from Apple. I think they have Ipod with 20Gb harddisk or with 4Gb memory. I dont own one myself, but they are very popular.
I dont know current prices, but I would guess around 10,000 baht.

From what i was told by someone in the know, after this coming christmas, the ipod is going to be out of date with even bigger and better devices coming onto the market. Thats why over the last month and on to the build up till crimbo, prices are going to drop steadily. (This is what I was told yesterday when i said i was thinking of buying a similar thing anyway!)
I was looking at the Toshibia gigabit! But now i dont know what to do!
http://gigabeat.toshiba.co.uk/
So my (not very knowledgeable) advice would compare how much she want it now! To the price available!

Apple iPod Nano
fyi...
Note that last night, Apple announced a two new products (the iPod nano and a combined ipod-phone thing), which will be available (in the USA) pretty much immediately.
This may (over the next few weeks/months) affect the prices of the "old" products.
....
OK, Petter beat me, by 2 minutes. Serves me right for multi-tasking replying to messages with doing "real" work.

Now what's wrong with having a personal cd player and taking your favourite cds with you? That's what I do when abroad? How many cds can a ipod hold and how do you get them in to it?

The mini came in 4GB and 6 GB models. I have heard that the nano is the replacement for it coming in at 4GB. The price for the nano is equivalent at $199US here. The main difference is the color screen and it is smaller in size.
I just heard about the release this morning just after writing that post.

Because,Mr Betamaxman, a cd player is much bigger, and you have to change the cd every time,as well as lug them around
You copy the cd tracks onto your PC hard disc, then upload them onto the ipod.
A mini ipod can hold 500tracks, the standard ones 5000 I am told by my nipper. Also the quality is better with no skipping of tracks.
Its very easy for someone as PC literate as yourself

Changi Airport is a very good place for all electrical goods Cliff.
If you are buying ,that will be your best place.
I saved £70 by buying a camera there instead of the UK

Betamax - you are soooooooo out of date, I've had VHS for more than 2 years now
Can I plug my hifi headphones in to an ipod? You use a lead from the computer to the ipod to upload the files? How do you find the track you want if there are 5000 tracks on it?
I like Pink Floyd, so I guess there is only room for about 3 tracks of theirs
PC literate - I'll have you know I set up a hotmail address today (how do I access it?)

OK Gez, nice reply
Yes you can use your own hi-fi headphones with the small adapter jack to listen to the ipod.
Yes there is a lead supplied to upload the tracks/albums to the ipod from the PC.
There is a menu on the ipod to search, for either track, artist or album so it should be easy to find the track in the menu,
Anything else? hehe

It's getting tempting, I must admit. Where is cheaper for a good one - Doha, Patong, BKK or Burma?

I would say Doha, closely followed by BKK. I know nothing about Burma I'm afraid
I remember they were about £40 cheaper in Abu Dhabi than the UK.
Perhaps someone on the ground can check the prices for you in BKK and Patong

Go for the nano
You definitely want the iPod "nano" 4GB model. They are hard to come by, so cue up early to get yours. They just came out a few days ago.

Would be nice to have a Ipod nano and a radio transmitter to play music in the car, instead of listen to Thai radio. (Well, I have a CD player but...)
Anyone knows if these radio transmitters are available in Phuket?

Not the best way...
Nicke,
I am not sure if they are available in Phuket, but I have one of those devices. They play over a blank FM channel on your stereo. I have the one by Monster Cable. Not the best way to enjoy the music, I'm afraid.
The cassette player adapters give a better quality over FM/CD car stereos, unfortunately. I wish they would make a car stereo with an iPod adapter, like you can get in a new BMW or whatever.
