Plasma TV for sale

As part of moving back to Oz I am going to sell my LG 42" Plasma TV, as I'm not sure it will survive the removalists all the way out here. I'm looking at 80,000 baht for it, and you'll be able to get it sometime after 14th November when I'm there.

PM me if your interested

I 'might' be able to get you about 50 for it from a buddy..

Sad to say but you can get 42 inchers for 99k baht new in bkk now..

Would depends heavily on its specs.. If its a HiDef panel (for gaming there wont be high def TV here for a while), its brightness, and contrast etc..

How old is it ??

I know prices have dropped considerably, you can even get them 99K at Central new as well. Its about probably 8 months old, will be open to offers, but was hoping abit more than that.

Do you have its specs or the list so I can let him see..

If it sonly 8 months old then it might appeal to my mate.. I was expecting a 2 or 4 year old one and resolution and contrast has really improved..

Another mate has a 3 or so year old 42 incher that just went on the fritz.. It requires about 60k to repair it and we were talking about them.. He seems to think that even on old low rez low contrast one is still worth 'old style' prices.. Just cuase the damn thing cost 5k a few years ago doesnt mean its worth half that now !!!

Cant say for sure, but it looks like this one

http://www.lge.com/prodmodeldetail.d...pagePerNum= 6

I know when we brought it I thought the picture was absolute crap, but then I put a good UPS on it, and then with the clean power supply the picture was very good.

If that is the one its goot a good spec in brightness and contrast.. Not really HiDef but at 42 inch its not a deal breaker..

Also HDMI inputs for future and PC compatibility is very good.

Will see him in the next week.. Let you know if something can be worked out.

Yeah but its the HDMI link thats future proofing it..

HiDef links now are coming with HDCP (Hi Def copy protection) which may well become part of the handshaking process on HDDVD and PC based home networking for media storage systems etc.. I made sure that my projector had the possibility for HDCP just in case over the DVI digital link (HDMI was not out then) and it cannot be carried over RGB (component) or RGBHV (VGA)..

The secure architecture that longhorn is pushing may well raise some ugly consumer side issues when longhorns version of Windows Media center becomes reality.. The XBox 360 is going to have some nifty features for 'node' use and media distribution and behind the scenes is part of MS's long term goal of leveraging into the home space.. The DRM in WMV is an awkward beastie..

well I sorta agree.. I have worked with the media group in MS a fair bit and the thing is the movie studios simply will not hand over the keys to high definition archival quality of thier archives without DRM.. Its a case of take it or leave it..

The problem occurs really as the DRM tools that MS have now built are so flexible and its up to the content owner to choose how to implement them. On disc DRM is relatively benign and simply preotect content but the online DRM is a ballache.. Lose net connection and suddenlty you cant watch your own movie.. You cant watch movies in another region like region coding on DVD but based on IP lookup tables and anon or known proxies are blocked. you can have time limited showings (like the BMW 'hire' clips distributed in High def) good for x amount of days..

The real issue is that if the company that provides the key server for the content goes down all your purchased content will no longer play !! The roll out of the first DRM encoded Hi Def title (T2 on WMVHD) was a disaster with it selling globally but only working in N America (I actually was one fo the first to get round that) and also thier key servers crashing and not being ready for the content.. Basically just proved what many people afraid of online DRM feared all along..

You can buy an LG Plasma TV that looks just like that one in Phuket for 75k baht new, One of my customers bought one and was not impressed, however he's yet to put it through a UPS so maybe thats a solution.

I tried out one of the new BenQ LCD's the other day and was very impressed, more expensive than plasmas at 69,990 for a 32" but its Hi-Def and has a DVI port.

Havent seen any Plasma's with HDMI here yet, but must admit to not looking around at them for 6 months or so.

LCD's probably have alonger lifespan also.. Just have to make sure theres no dead pixels on the panel at purchase and fingers crossed..

LCD 'should' have a better color gamut but black level I m not sure on.. To be honest I have not followed flat panel displays much as I am more into the projectors..

So how long is the lifespan of a plasma these days?

LCDs is quickly dropping in price and some people says LCDs is better than plasma but I have no idea myself or what grounds they base it on. I just see both Plasma and LCD is ready available these days but Thailand is still lot more expensive than e.g. Sweden.

LCD vs Plasma

A few years ago they were saying that the LCDs would have a longer lifespan, but I'm not so sure there's much difference anymore. Also, isn't there now a third type? The name escapes me.

The first generation of plasma's had a panel life of about 40,000 hours, but the newer ones have up to 80,000 hours, which is about the same as a standard CRT TV.

Problem is you dont really know until those hours have been done if that holds true..

If I was looking in the 40 inch and under I would look to a good LCD.. over that size LCD's dont have the sizes yet affordably.. I was told that in the next 12 - 18 months expect LCD prices to tumble as RoI on manufacturing klicks in.. In theory they should be much much cheaper than plasma to make.

As to why LCD or plasma.. LCD should have better color gamut.. Niether of them have the best black levels (part of what makes up contrast ratio) but LCD should have much better ANSI contrast ratio over absolute on off CR (those terms basically mean that ANSI CR is the ability to show white and black on the screen at once and still display a deep black while on off is the best black to the best white).. Deep black level is important in a videophile setting as milky blacks tend to destroy depth perception in dark scenes and if ANSI CR (the more important of the 2 CR specs IMHO) is bad then shadow detail gets lost.

All that said thats coming from a videophile bias not just boob tube TV watching which either of these technologies will give fine results.

I think based on the prices for new ones there now, its not worth trying to sell it. I think I'll run the risk of the shipping over here, at least it will be insured.

yeah really 40 - 50k is probably as good as you would get IMHO depending on the spec it was sold with..

The Shop in Phuket is the elctrical shop near Robinsons, has (had?) them on display for 79,999 Baht, and he will come down on that if you push.

Also lots of the big electrical shops have sales when the newer models come out, someone else I know picked up a 50" Samsung for 99,999 Baht.

LCD's run a lot cooler than Plasmas, I also believe that they use substantially less electricity.

The other types of TV and ones that I'm seeing more and more of in Thailand are LCD Rear Projectors and DLP Rear Projectors. I don't really care for rear projection myself though.

As you say steve, they are insured for the stuff they transport anyway, i am sure it would survive the journey.

My boss transported stuff from Canada to West africa, this included TVs, computers/monitors and all sorts of fragile stuff, the only thing that was damaged when the stuff arrived was his 6 foot long, one inch think metal weight lifting bar, which had been bent to almost a right angle
