Business Advice - Beauty Salon / Hairdresser
I like some feedback if possible guys. Everyone who goes to Patong wants to stay, they always think "what business could I start to sustain the lifestyle"? I'm same same.
The beer bar thing seems like a fair amount of work and has a few pitfalls for young players it seems. So I was thinking about a beauty / hairdressing salon.
Can anyone give an opinion about whether this would be viable and possible problems? I'd be targeting farang tourists and the place would be nicely fitted out in line with Western expectations. But apart from Central and the day spa thing you don't see many salons around the place. I assume this must be for a reason. Perhaps it's already overdone I'm not sure.

Hair dressing is one of the reserved jobs/businesses for Thais. You would not be able to start this up by yourself, unless the business was registered in a Thai name.

Every ex BG and her auntie set up beauty salons.. Cheap to start.. Low skil level needed to operate.. Pittance returns due to competition.. If you havent seen tthem I dont know where you were looking..
The girl running it needs to have a established network of mates with loose money (sucessful BG's) the kind that get hair done nightly or bi nightly before going out and nails etc done..
My girl wanted to set one up.. I made her count the number of Salons from one end of Nanai and Sai Nam Yen on a bike ride.. Then pointed out each and every one was competition.. I think she got the point.
Its not to say that they cant make a small income for a GF.. But nothing like a living for what we need and I think the vast majority are vanity projects funded by sponsers and BF's just to keep them out the bars..

I don't need them Sefton, I have no hair and I'm really good-looking, there's no room for improvement. Not really.
I'm talking about the salons like you see in Central. It's 500 baht for a number 1 there. It only takes 4 minutes. They seem to do quite well.
However I take the point about the competition, I'd seen many low-end salons, you're right they're all over the place. But as for high-end ones, can't say I've seen one apart from the day-spas or at Central.
But I stand to be corrected. Anyway, it was just a thought. Thanks for the advice.

I wouldnt even like to hazard a guess as to how much rent the Central hairdressers pay, probably in excess of 200,000 baht a month I'm guessing.
I dont understand how some of these businesses stay open, Phuja in Central for example - I think they pay 1,000,000 baht rent a month - Yet I've never seen more than 30 people in there at one time.
I think the best sort of business to start would be something to support the local real-estate or bar scene, perhaps importing something difficult to get hold of (not drugs)
Choose something you enjoy (not drugs) and just aim to make a living from it, if its very successful and actually makes some money then its a bonus.

Buy a car and run a taxi service for the BMs here, publish your mobile nr and we can call you whenever we need transportation.
For swedish; Sibylla fastfood mobile or permanent restaurant would be welcomed. Also decent kebab food.

Get one of these and push it around! I think they are great and any positioned between the Beach Road end of Bangla and the Patong Villa will always get this Fat B4stards business at 5 in the morning!

If there was Benjy, I would still go for the local stuff available on the streets. It would appear to me that like most places that try to sell food of one country in another country, they just can't seem to get it right IMHO!
I've had Bangers and Mash in Tenerife, a British Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding in Rhodes and so called Fish and Chips in Patong and they were all Cr4p!
I think I would be sticking to what I can find for sale by the local vendors while on holiday in Phuket. I'll take a kebab the next time I am in Athens! Just my opinion!

The Pizza place near MTB is pretty good, rates pretty highly up in terms of Pizza's (USA ones are still the best I've had though).
I like Thai food, but its a bit boring to eat it every day - Havent had a kebab in 4 years, UK ones are great, greasy monstrosoties but taste very good.
Fish and Chips I've never had a decent one outside of the UK, I think a decent indian curry place on Bangla would make a fortune, have to be UK style though.

If you want good Indian food , try Navrang Mahal , it's at the far end of Soi Patong Resort. Excellent meals , big portions , and if you can't finish it all they will give you a doggy bag.

I had a great Indian meal in a place.........sorry forgoten the name...........on Rat-U-Thid Rd approximately half way between Christins and Soi Kepsap...same side..almost opposite Lamai Guest House and that clothes market there.....
Once again huge servings and if you order a coke out comes a 1.25 litre bottle
The food was excellent and they also had hookahs to sit back and relax with after the meal..........very popular the night I was there too

I know the place and have seen it on my walk back to Bangla from...........The shops!! It's set back a bit, loads of pot plants and all the Hookah's outside on display. Menu looks good but I know my tailor uses the place and I would probably end up coming out of there after a meal with 2 new suits, a blazer, 6 pairs of chino's and 23 business cards for other tailors! Might give it a go next time I am in town and fancy a Ruby Murray.

On face value Nicke that sounds great. But then I start to think of the practicalities. First, I'll be likely to be so pissed myself that I'd be the one who needs a drive | |
