Welcome to the board.
There are a few members on here that work in the oil business. You'll just have to wait until one of them logs in.

nothing to lose by filling in this form
www.fastoiljobs.com
although dont hold your breath as i filled in the form about 4 weeks ago, the site says it will get back to you within 4-5 weeks, i filled it in while i was pissed off at work so even if they do get back to me i dont think i want to move.
there are loads of jobs out there, the main thing is to get your foot in the door, would you consider sweeping the rig floor to get a start???
all the best
Simon

The offshore bart on Nanai.. Big gary recently did his LST training.. Ian is ex offshore.. My housemate is in the oil game.. Scottish Steve is offshore.. Loads of rig boys..
One of my mates in Pattaya who did LST this spring is now on 380 USD per day.. From a 2 week LST course !!! Another mate looks like hes just landed a 650 USD per day in Singapore..
Right now with oil prices what they are wages are really heating up it seems.
Could do worse than try Kaverna in Sing...

Oil rig companies
A lot of my mates in Scotland work on the rigs. One of the quickest ways is to produce a good CV and actually go and knock on doors in Aberdeen. All the oil company offices are listed in various places eg phone book etc.If you are qualified in engineering some company will take you on.You can do it by just posting your CV but in most cases the personal approach is better.
Nowadays you have to do your offshore survival course first before they will take you on.They are done at Stonehaven south of Aberdeen.

Thanks Sefton. That's just one more reason i'd like to shout you a beer when i get over.
I'm only a dumb 4rse sparky, not an engineer unfortunately or my chances might be better. Still, it might be worth a try.

You could consider retraining though.. The LST stuff (Life Support Tech) is a 2 week course.. Normal rates for that are 200 - 250 the 380 above is very lucky I think.. Same with the 650 per day, if he gets it thats 19500 USD in a 30 day month !!

Training not required
If you want to start at the bottom you can get hired on as a roustabout (deck hand who does all basic jobs). You can do all sorts of support work and if you can stick the 2 week on 2 week off rotation move on to the drilling side and become a roughneck( working on the drill floor). From there promotions up to more senior level require lots of experience and extra courses but you have a career.

Whats dialy roustabout and roughneck rates ??
Out here in Asia I thought it was all Burmese, Philippino and Indian labour ?? In the US / Mexican Gulf thats a little different but not easy to break into that geographical market I thought.

some company names
i'm trying to get into this industry as well. i'm in the u.s., though. the big companies i hear a lot about are global santa (or sante) fe, pride drilling, bj services (really, not fooling around), and one that i can't remember the name of the company but i think their website is www.deepwater.com or some derivation of that. i started my search looking in the local phonebooks. if you have the equivalent in uk, just look up "oil drilling" or "directional drilling" or type in these words in a search engine. the major companies have multiple companies that are offshoots. i called five different companies inquiring about offshore jobs and each one said, "let me transfer you to our corporate office", each time transfering me to global sante fe. turns out, the major companies are the owners and operators of the rigs so they're the only ones that staff them. the smaller subsidiaries have nothing to do with staffing. good luck. i just faxed my resume today to pride drilling. i'm hoping to land a roustabout job and begin training on either the 20th of december or the 28th of january. if i do land this job, i see myself making my maiden voyage to thailand within the year. ...hence the reason i really, really hope i get the job.
take care

i dont understand. someone who has no training in the oil field can just take a course and have a good chance of getting hired?
like say an accountant, who wants to change careers?

I guess the course they take is the training required.
BTW I don't fancy being a roughneck, I'll stick to accounting. I did work for a few weeks (20 years ago) on a jackup barge, making notes of what was happening on some site investigation.

That about sums it up..
The LST course is a 2 week course and then you have your heli drop training and medical etc to do.. I know guys who have doen RoV work and that was an 8 week course IIRC.. That was pretty well paid..

Its a networking thing.. Once you have the paper the first job is the hardest.. after one or two gigs you have some experience to sell and it snowballs and gets easier..

more company names
go to halliburton's website because all the subsidiaries hire from the halliburton/kellogg brown root website, and there is another company that has offices in the uk, aside from africa, singapore, etc... and that company is Ensco. the website is www.enscous.com, go to "contact" and it lists the offices and their contact info. hope this helps.
