Compulsory Charges for Christmas Dinners

We have friends staying locally for Christmas who are
upset by being told their hotel will charge 4000bht /head for a Christmas dinner they will not eat.
What are the hotel's legal rights in making this charge?
Can our friends refuse to pay?

I have told them they should not pay, but they are timid and not sure.
Any ideas welcome.

have had to pay this charge myself, its a pretty normal thing around se asia(also NY eve).
dont agree with it, but they make it clear when booking, and you dont have much choice in the matter.
could approach manager but dont think it will change anything.

This topic comes up every year about this time. Everyone is advised at the time of booking that a "compulsory dinner" will be charged for on both Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. You pay it whether or not you eat it. This has been common practise in Thailand for all hotels for long before I can even remember.

Its a scam, but its not illegal.. Up to the Hotels to make thier own rules and charges..

I make it clear to management that I will not book a place that rips me off like that so that at least they know they are losing a guest.. Thing is over these dates its not like they have much spare cpacity anyway so its like a high season room tax / premium..

One of the criteria I used when booking a room over New Year was that there was no compulsory dinner.

Would never book a place with a compulsory X-Mass or New Year Dinner , as I usually go to Crustasian's place for Christmas nosh and am too busy celebrating at New Year to bother with food.

It does seem to be a way for some of the hotels to increase earnings over the holiday period, it would be easy enough for them to have an option at time of booking whether you do/don't want to partake. How would they stand if you said no ,"because of religious grounds".

It still stinks.
There was a dodge which worked for us about 6 years ago at The Royal Cliff, Pattaya
Instead of the high cost Xmas" compulsory " dinner I told them we were eating in their Italian Restaurant a la carte, and it was a quarter the cost,a lot better and they accepted the situation .and we could still watch the fireworks afterwards.

Despite things being very heavily booked in Pattaya this year I turned away from vacancies in three hotels because of these charges. Feel free to cut this out and show it to hoteliers who do this or include it in a petition to the KING...

I suppose she is not good in English...or she has a problem with the dates.
But suppose you arrived there in May and having paid your Christmasdinner as requested, and you asked for it on arrival I would love to see the result

An alternative is to stay in a hotel that does not serve food, plenty of those around in patong and elsewhere in los.

I don't know why anyone whinges about this charge. Its not only in LOS hotels, but worldwide, and although a moneymaking scheme, perfectly legal. Everyone can see that its charged for when making the booking and that is the time to complain.
If you don't like it,sleep on the beach that night. Its not exactly going to break the bank for one meal is it.

Absolutely, they do advertise this so all's fair & above board.

If I were Wellington, I would be advising my friends that they should eat the dinner as it is paid for, no point in going out to eat instead and paying more money. No sense in that at all.

It's like cutting you own nose to spite your face.

I think its the age old attitude, that is not done back where we come from, so why should it be done in LOS.

As I said, its worldwide, not just LOS. It is charged for in UK hotels as well for anyone staying Christmas Day.
And you should see the rates the UK charge per night It makes LOS look what it is,an absolute bargain with or without that meal.

Let's just say that if I was to hire a stunner from a london escort agency for 2 hours, I could buy a plane ticket to los for around the same money.
