Thailand Expats - Work Permit Renewals

For the last 3 years if my work permit here in Phuket finished on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday I have been allowed to renew it on the next working day afterwards.

This time my work permit expired on Tuesday 3rd January, a public holiday, and the 4th day in a row that the labour department was closed. When I went in as usual today on 4th January to renew they told me that "they have started to enforce the rules that have always been in place" and the work permit must be renewed BEFORE the weekend or public holiday on which it expires.

I went to see the registrar and plead my case but unfortunately they would give me no flexibility whatsoever and confiscated my work permit. I now have no work permit and am required to apply all over again for a new one.

So apologies to all my customers, you're going to have to wait a while until I'm allowed to do business with you again.

Thats rather unfortunate, but knowing that are very strict about these issues, I would have done it before the holiday period.

I had the same problem last year, due to public holiday I renewed one day too late and they cancelled my work permit.

So always make sure you renew before your work permit expire, regardless of holidays or not.

Anyone know if they're asking tea money these days for work permit applications? In 2002 I had to pay 4000 baht under the table before they would hand mine over.

Also are they prompt with processing applications? Back then they hung onto mine for nearly 2 months after the date it was stamped and then I had to pay income tax for the time they had been hanging onto it, even though I couldn't work!

Hallo! If i want to work in Patong were should i look. Can some tell me were i should look after work becourse i dont know that.

Er there is no work for farang in Patong you have to make your own eg. buy business like bar or guest house etc.

It might to say what type of work your looking for, you have diving listed in your profile.
