Roadside Rubbish
Since first coming to Phuket in 1992 I have noticed a considerable improvement in the gradual lessening of litter along most roads around Phuket.
It is greatly better than along the A3 or M5 in UK.
At this time of year teams are out, usually 3 guys with strimmers, cutting the verges and leaving in their wake a beautiful smell of grass, a lovely trim roadside and all the resulting uncovered debris from the last two months.
So all the effort is spoiled for the lack of an extra man on the team with a bag doing the litter picking as they go by.
Whose brain needs nudging into action, so simple, over this?

I noticed during my ride from the airport to Patong in November that it was quite improved from my last trip, which was a year earlier. Hopefully this trend will continue.
Now they need to work on some of the downton locations.

Pity you didn't read the subject before blasting off with a completely irrelevant reply
And from your distance you should do a bit more research.

The thing is when you come in a single generation from food wrappings being banana leaves and coconut shells to non biodegradeable materials and plastics it takes time to learn and condition people to the change.. I am not saying its right I am just pointing out that its not been something the parents have educated thier children on beacuse in the parents lifetimes it was not an issue..
I remember driving along in Samui on a scooter with Wifey, had just finished a gatorade or something and as I tried to put in it he basket she says 'here give it to me' as soon as I do she just lobbed it off the bike hook shot style straight off onto the pristine picture postcard beach or verge etc.. I was shocked and gave her the lecture but this is a smart well travelled lived in Europe years woman !!! They just dont seem to have heard that they cant just drop and chuck stuff that doesnt decompose.. She learnt after hearing it a few times..

Thats the best explaination for it that I have ever heard and makes sense. As you say try and tell them they shouldnt do it and all you get is a funny look, and "why not"

Man pick him up
This was the reply that I got when I admonished someone for throwing plastic wrappings out the car window. No he f*cking won't I said. Blank look and silence followed.
However, to be fair, here in Oz we are conditioned to respect the environment and people still litter.
Vietnam was a garbage tip, in my opinion, and I was told it had been far worse.
Probably, when you are trying to survive day to day, the environment is the least of your worries.
One of the good things about having sea-side bars/restaurants/chairs etc seems to be that they at least keep the area in front of their business clean.

Another one who hasn't bothered to read my original text in which I was praising the efforts of the grass strimmers ,a gang of 3 between karon /patong yesterday and suggesting, nicely that a gang of 4 would then be able by picking up and bagging ,to complete and make a nice job , nicer.
Do read and digest and think next time you have something worthwhile to say.

I did read and digest..
When posts start complaining about someones brain and adding a beating hammer as a conclusion I usually take that as a less than positive.. Dont know about in your world but thats how they read in mine..
Worthwhile as in positive non complaining posts ???

I was not complaining!
You again have not read or digested; I was suggesting!
Your angle on this is not worth further discussion

wellington,
i did read your post thouroughly and actually at 1st i was suprised that you were saying something positive, but you ended it by saying that they could use another person to finish the job, with a hammer figure, so like sefton, i take that as negative.
i just have never read anything from you that was positive.

If you want to join a discussion about today's situation, you should be here and see for yourself
Otherwise keep your distant remarks and opinions to yourself.

(joke?)
I have just come back with my wife from lunch in Patong and the road to Karon now has a team of five; 3 strimming and 2 girls picking and bagging.
So A rather positive result achieved with efforts via email, and other letters , besides the big input from Marc n Livinlos........ ..
I am pleased and I'm sure the mass of tourists and others will be glad not to see the previous garbage.
The whole point to those who have seemed unable to grasp it is that those of us who live in and love Phuket want it to succeed and get the lost tourists back who have been deterred from coming by bad publicity and The Tsunami.
Everything we can do to encourage the authorities to beautify Phuket goes some way to achieving that aim.
So do be helpful, and try not to make uninformed remarks which serve no useful purpose
Your post as mentioned above meant nothing to me .

To give u an example of how they do it isaan style
There r no rubbish bins anywhere!!!!
there is a rubbish pile which gets updated every morning between 5 & 6 am and then during the day and early evening it is slowly burned
The chickens & dogs will eat anything in the rubbish that is to their liking which usually means anything
Litter is literally dropped where u sit and if its still remaining 5-6am then mummy and daddy will sweap it up as their 1st job of the day
So u can see why the whole process of reminding thai to keep the environment tidy is a bit alien as the whole process is somewhat different from the western concept of getting everything swept up by the local council
Pretty much what ive described is along the lines of what LIL was saying
I can just see Lord Haw Haw Wellington doing things Thai style, some people just want to move the ways of little england to wherever they go as nothing else is good enough
and of course he is such an integrated part of the community around patong that he wouldnt possibly no that Marc26 has spent more time in Patong in the last 18 months than anywhere else, albeit that we all seme to no
