Where to buy a motorbike/scooter

Hello all,

I arrive in Phuket Monday (16), intending to find a home and live there full-time. So, many questions. But the very first priority may be transport, and I propose to buy myself one of those 125 (or 150) hp motorbikes, ideally secondhand but in good condition; if not, new. Any ideas, please, of where to look? What dealers are reliable, and stand behind their sales?

Alas, I'm sure many more questions will follow...

Happy to get answers over a drink at my expense

No, no, I'm an idiot..

No, no, I'm an idiot. Cc, not hp. One of those little things that'll carry me back and forth between Surin, Kamala, Patong and the great big city of Phuket.

I suggest you buy a new one, they are not expensive.

The only problem is that smaller dealers dont know how to handle the paperwork for farang buyers and may say they can not sell to farangs.

If you buy from a bigger dealer it may not be any problems, the staff know what to do.

45 to 55 for new ones (basic to niec automatic Mio etc).. Getting second hand ones can be tough as people tend to want silly money, saw someone trying to sell a few year old one for 35+ when you may as well have a new one then (same goes for cars).. My buddy just bought another 2 this time back as his missus rents them so just adding to the stable..

As for standing behind thier sales, once its second hand there wont be much of that.. Even new you buy it its your problem would be how I assume it would work..

Long term rentals are 3000 - 3500 for an ok one to about 4k or 4500 for a brand new shiny automatic one.. Might be an idea for a few months while you look..

I have a Kawasaki Cheer I might let go as I was looking at getting a new JRD.. I know of a Sonic (more sporty style with a clutch) for sale at probably 25k..

Cool Bike showroom

The bike showroom beside Shakers Bar on Ratutit Road seem to do a lot of business and have a good selection of bikes and scooters.

They are the JRD dealership for Patong.. Same bikes but more keen to make a deal in Phuket town dealership... the Patong one didnt want to let me have a test ride even though we explained I am here years and non tourist !!! I mean.. No test ride to sell a bike.. They also said it comes in one color only yet I know it doesnt.. They just wanted to sell me the one they have !!

I do like the 125 quests they have tho..

Go buy ur bike udon or khon kaen, have a few days away whilst ur at it

They fall over themselves trying to help u, I baught a Suzuki Raider R150cc twin cam with electric start, 54,500 baht, the absolute bollocks. It costs nxt to nothin to get it sent down to HKT.

At the time they had a yellow 1 in stock, but i wanted a blue 1, no problem they said if u can wait 1 week, I got phone call nxt day to say my bike had arrived & to come & pick it up. The branch manager came out to see me, they do bike runs on a sun and wanted me to come a long...................

Well i thought it was my bike anyway, the wife took a shine to it so i was relegated to driving the Isuzu D-Max Hi-Lander

Phuket just isnt Thailand for me

G

ps Sef fcuk the JRD, get this baby, trick front disk, rear disk, twin cam, six speed with proper clutch, 11,500rpm red line, does at least 135kmph

Graeme do they sell the suzuki on phuket and if so would it cost much more?

G or Sef - Second question, I got my international licence but Duncan cannot get one becuase he only has a provisional licence, is it too risky for him to drive a small bike in phuket or are there ways and means of getting one when there? PM me if it is best to keep private.

Dodg

Reckon for sure they will sell it in HKT

Sus out where a Suzuki dealer is, best bet to go to Phuket Town, I know there's one on the main highway north to the airport also. As for price im not sure if it will be more expensive but i suspect it will be. I paid 54,500 baht for mines

I'll try and get a photo for u

As for ur son's licence, the reality is that there r just too many police checks to take a risk, especially as a farang. If he doesnt have licence then the chances r as a farang he will be stopped and 300 baht fine, this will of course just keep happening as he wont be able to produce a licence

He can try carry his provisional as long as it has the photo id card, he might get away with this if the cops dont pay too much attention to the licence, that will be a hit or miss job

When i stayed patong there wasnt a week went by without me getting stopped and checked for licence

get the word

i will get the gf to speak to her brother and also her cousin, 1 works for yamaha and other for honda in udon, and get the word which is the best in their opinions for new or recent second hand purchase.

scooters are cheaper in the issan from what i did find out before.

looked at bikes last trip, in phuket town, i was told by the saleman via a thai friend (male) that the best value is a repossession bike.

BGs and others get these bikes when the goings good then have them repossessed when economic times change.

the thai at the dealers said that maybe 15-20 000 saving on bikes less than 8 months old with not much on the clock.

as we know thais like everything new and shiny, so they dont like buying second hand.

Nice bike G, and very suitable for Isaan.. The JRD quest is the opposite end of the scale.. Big automatic thing with not only a helmet storage under the seat but a sealable glove box !! Great for round town and they just look that bit cooler than the standard scooters everyone rides, more like the aprillias and stuff everyone has in Holland..

They have ABS and a few other very nice things according to the specs but the one thing I fear is that its a Thai made bike and quality control etc..

If its a photocard UK licence it will work on the roadblocks... Also I think I have a 50/50 of being able to turn that into a 10 year IDP (car / bike / the lot).. Drop me a line when your here...

It is a Provisional License , which is basically a "Learners" one , you need it to have Driving Lessons. Don't know if it has a picture or not , when I got mine you still had to have someone walk in front of your car waving a flag.

Yeah he's got a photo id plastic jobby but its provisional, ie he hasn't passed car test so can ride up to 125cc bike in UK but not take a passenger, he's taken his bike training thingy and uses his vespa 125 to go to work everyday for the last 2 years so more experienced than me. His plastic id provisional licence looks very similar to mine, going to have a close look now to see if easy to spot difference, but thanks Sef will chat about IDL when I'm over.

Because of the madness on the roads in Thailand was initially and am still a bit worried about him riding bikes over there but until he passes his car test got to have transport, bit of a catch 22 unless he uses taxis everywhere then you loose freedom. Came to the conclusion it is really a bit like the comments I got when he first came over with me, think it comes down to the person and their previous experiences and obviously keeping off the bikes at night time.

Don't buy the JRD

Sefton,

I've heard bad things about those bikes, transmission, quality of plating on engine parts you don't see and they rust up. I know it's a new company but you probably won't see their bikes on the road as they get older.

Would probably recomend either Graham's Suzuki or the Honda's as they are tried and true.

Cheers!

You got that right Peter..

The bullshit I used to complicate my life with looking back on it was so lost.. What clothes you wore, what watch was on your wrist, etc etc.. Now Its flip flops and using by telephone to tell the time.. Another reason why I like expats here is they are judging you on you not judging you on superficial things.
