Just bear in mind that I was given abit of grief at Phuket airport when re-entering on non imm O with only a few days left on the clock. Got in, but just be prepared.

Can I just say thanks to all you great guys for giving me support and your best wishes(sorry about making loads of individual posts but still havn't worked out how to link different ones all in one post) ( and it increases my post count away for the 1k).
I have had a real $hit day at work and whilst i have managed to get all the important stuff organised it seems a never ending list of "oh yeahs" when you keep remembering things to do before you go, I know I will leave a bunch of them undone but heck. It is things like i thought today, wonder if my no claims bonus proof will be of use in Thailand, this thought then gives you an extra half an hour searching files to get your car and bike no claims proof, then another half an hour to think where amongst my stuff should I put this so I can find it if needed when I get there and there are loads of these little oh yeah thoughts, loads of little places I have stashed them away for safety and i know I won't find them when I get there anyway.
The other stange thing I have found is how many of my friends seem to have acquired an amazing desire to see me all the time as if they have got to get as much of me as possible before I go. This is of course really nice of them, just not the way I am. My mates organised a sort of send off for me Friday night which was nice, they berated me for not organising a party etc myself but i had decided against that because i know so many people that I was more concerned about forgetting to invite someone and also this little trip seems to be less of an amazing thing to me than all my friends (probably me being naive). Perhaps it is not so usual, we tend to live our respective lives the way the majority do but I have travelled extensively with my business and feel more that this is a exploration trip and if i end up not liking living in LOS then I will up sticks and move somewhere else I fancy. I decided to do it now cos the boys are 19 and 21, I'm widowed and feck we have all been to Thailand!!!!, why not have a bit of adult disneyland before I'm too old to really enjoy it.
I do intend to keep posting my little experiences, good and bad because I think it will help others who have thought about doing this someday and yes one of the big plusses is meeting all the BM's that on my previous trips I have just missed in the past.
Well one day left in Blighty, leaving home tomorrow at 5.30pm, got to face the dreaded M25 so will be away from the forum for a few days whilst in Bangers but will then let you know how the road trip down was. Arranged a driver with a mini bus, laptops with Dvd's, crate of singha and tirak and her crazy mate for company, making it a two day jobby so should be fun. Brrrrrrr its cold here, threw all my jumpers and coats away yesterday, might have been one day premature with that decision!!!!

Congrats Dodger, big move.
About your sons, i kind of know how you feel. My parents split up when i was 6 and me my mum, brother, and step dad moved to Sydney leaving my Dad behind. Every few months he would fly up to visit me, and from that day on i have always respected him, and know he will ALWAYS be there for me. Its great to hear about your son playing golf, i play a bit, but im sure im no where near as good as him :p If hes there when i come back he might have to give me a few lessons. Look forward to hearing all your stories, and remember to stay in contact with your sons as much as you can, even a phone call. Congrats mate

If you get 4 renewals does that not mean only going on visa runs every 15 months? Or if you have to go abroad to renew, and it is that that you can do 4 times, what happens after 15months?
What is the problem with a residents visa? And can you get one at your age?
I may be away myself if and when you reply, but not in Thailand

Dodger is net yet old enough for the easy long stay retirement visa.. 50 y/o and 800k in the bank each year is the requirements..
Hes now on a 1 year non imm O and will do visa runs every 90 days.. Doing a visa run on the last day of his year gains him another 90 days so the system can be played for 1 year + 90 days..

Yeah re apply outside of Thailand.. Problem is most local SE Asian embassies are a lot less easy than home country embassies and consuls..

The very best of luck to you Dodger, it is great to read a story like this as it happens and thanks for sharing it with us. I hope your other son will join you for a holiday at some stage down the road.
Didnt realise you were thinking of doing this but fair play to you for 'Living the Dream'
Hope to read all about your progress. See you in April.

Missed this thread too - so belated congrats on your 1000th post. A big and brave move - good to see you keeping property interest back in UK, always makes life here more secure having income source outside Thailand.
Wishing you all the best for your new life here as an expat.

If Dodger have company and work permit it easy. But for myself, I enjoy my holidays outside Thailand so thats why I never bothered to get 1 year extensions. I enjoy my visa runs every 3 months.

Same same, Nicke. I love LOS obviously, but even a few hours in Malaysia or Burma or Singapore (even better overnight) seems to get my head straight again. Some times I really need it.
