Well last few days have been a bit hectic buying stuff, got loads of advice spoke to sefton, nicke etc and then went out and did most things by sussing it out. Found out the thai way of dealing with the banks, first time went in to transfer some money and get a cheque book, asked to see the most important guy in the bank cos thought it was worth getting to know him. Mistake the most important bloke has to do 5 things at once and the 6th thing is your stuff, people just kept coming up to him whilst we were filling in forms and signing more paper than is really neccessary and stopping doing my things, took me an hour to do a 10 minute job, didn't get mad just kept telling myself this was thailand and I've got to get used to it. However went in today to two different banks one for my company account and one for my personal one, didn't que up just went straight to the most important looking bloke and he stopped dealing with the person in front of him and did my things straight away, in and out in 5 ins, funny system but seems okay to me now I am using the falang ignorant system.
Once I had my cheque book thought time to buy a couple of small 125cc motorbikes, went to Phuket Town because it is the biggest place, get the best deal, wrong the place in patong is cheaper. Bought 2 Yamaha Nuevo Mx 125 automatics just to pop down the road etc. Filled in all the paperwork, got out my brand new bestest cheque book and watched the salesman face turn to horror, what is a cheque? havn't you got thousands of bahts on you in cash? had to make it out to cash and send a runner to the local bank, Thais it seems do not use or like cheque books, well that was a waste of time in the bank.
Yes Sefton, Graeme I know I listened to your very sensible advice, I went to the Toyota Garage and done a very good deal on the vigo with all the trimmings, listened to the resale benefits but there was a 5 week waiting list, so went off to the Isuzu garage and did an even better deal only a 10 day waiting list and that was with all the leather and colour combinations I wanted. Then went to a party at the guys house who was selling the Big Mean Black all singing and dancing beautiful Chevvy..............few beers later I own it, picking it up tomorrow because I am moving out of the Summer Breeze Hotel into a 3 bed apartment at Kamala. The property hunt has been very interesting looked at a few places in Patong, the Beverly Hills Apartments were about the best I saw, thanks once again to Sefton's advice but were about 40k per month, great views of Patong Bay, close but far enough away to keep me in some nights (havn't stayed in once yet since I've been here, but will I hope for my livers sake once I get an apartment). Went to Kamala with a thai property friend who introduced me to two of his friends who showed me a 3 bed detached house 150yds from the beach at 15k per mth but with haggling would take 12k and a small 2 bed bungalow 2km in land for 9k, would take 8k, both had satellite tv, internet links and own water supply for july and aug when water is rationed. But then met another friend who was just completing on a 3 bed apartment at Kamala Hills and wow its the dogs, ground floor infinity pool outside the door, big communial pool, gym just being built and such friendly neighbours, been to two drinks parties there already and havn't moved in yet. There are 49 apartments half are occupied all the time with Germans, Skandinavians and Brits, great bunch of people, more expensive at 20k but once I'm in I will post pictures its really nice place. Move in tomorrow (using my big ol black boy chevvy - god I love this car already).
Heh its just started raining, first rain I've seen since I've been here, I love the rain it cools it down a bit, but it better stop in an hour or so last night tonight as a patong resident. Just to let you all know I havn't got any cleverer in all my trips to LOS, was out with Duncan last night, MTB, Banana, Some crazy bar in Bangla, into Tiger went to Wet Dreams bar, chatted to two Russians for about an hour before it clicked they were prostitutes, didn't realise they were in Patong, by now well oiled bought a cuddly toy from the cart man at 300bht for a bigun (wasn't to oiled not to get a bit of a deal going) now the even more stupid bit, signed the toys bottom with my name, now I've got to avoid that side of the Tiger bars when Tirak is with me cos How am I going to explain that one!!! big ar$ed daffy the duck sitting behind the bar with my name in six inch letters on its derriere!!!!
Brilliant its stopped raining, time to go get ready for something to eat and got another free pass out again tonight, excellent!!!!! (by the way the blurry bald headed guy on the webcam in MTB actually looks like that, the cameras fine)

This is a very moving thread, thanks Dodger! The reason you are a blur in the MTB camera is you never sit down for more than a minute.
Great reports, wouldn't mind your opinion on Kamala when you get 5 minutes to yourself. Enjoy the chevvy 555555555555 Toot Toooooooooooot

D Man, its is very different lifestyle to living in Patong, I chose to live here initially for that reason and felt I would be able to stay in some nights. It has a real village feel to it and very quickly you get to know loads of people, locals included. Your nightlife activities are all the same but earlier, ie restaurants stop serving about 10pm, only a couple stay open later, bars shut at 2am, so your evening starts and finishes much earlier, we tend to go out at 8pm, whereas in Patong I never usually go out til 11pm. Because of this the community tends to have house parties on a very regular basis for the later night drinking etc, which all acts to you getting to know more people which in turns gets more party invites, also people just turn up at your apartment at all times for a chat and a few beers. It is really nice cos within a few days you feel like you know everyone and nothing then becomes a problem cos someone always knows someone to fix or get most things done. Rentals here are also much cheaper and more available than Patong because of the tsunami and its continued effects on Kamala, things are still being done to clear up the damage, the school is being rebuilt but as all things in Thailand, they have built it back in the same location right on the beach front? why didn't they take the opportunity to relocate it for safety and also to release prime beachfront realestate? only in Thailand!!
It of course increases costs when you want to go into Patong but tuk tuk is only about 4/500 return and you make up for that in rental savings and going out costs etc

Thanks for the info Dodger it's appreciated. I am hoping to have a look at a couple of places up there if and when I get over next. They are just about on or a little bit over my budget for a one year rental but I can live with that. They seem to be nicely situated out of the hussle and bussle and from your account there is still plenty going on.
Definately a drive over. Thanks for the info Dodger, keep the reports coming, I am living off the back of them 5555555555

This smaller community/vilage feel has its ups as well as downs. It's cool to know a lot of your local neighbours but you will soon find that everyone knows everything you are doing and have done. Some people are ok with this but I hate it. Just a heads up for you to look out for.

I know kamala pretty well
Firstly forget about having a dog unless you want him poisoned.
Plan on having your house broken into when your not there. (Many, many breakins)
They are building a two lane road through it so now the only super highway is running through kamala
The women in the bars... (well there's a reason they are in Kamala and not Patong)
Housing is a little cheaper.
There is not one good restaurant in the town unless you like Rockfish which my friends own and I like it.
Surin, Cherngtalay, Kata would be my choice if not Patong.
Cheers!

Don't want a dog

I live in a gated community with also very good individual security, alarm, outside additional secirity door etc, but I do not think theft is much greater than in any of the other major towns
They are building a two lane road through it so now the only super highway is running through kamala
This is quite unbeleivable, a duel carriageway but only through the town, then single lane either side of town? so we can all travel faster through the town centre? won't affect the beach front or bars etc near the beach but surely will affect the businesses along the main road.
The women in the bars... (well there's a reason they are in Kamala and not Patong)
Agree with you regarding the bar girls but there are some very nice girls working in the shops and restuarants etc and this is the sort of girl Duncs is looking for
Housing is a little cheaper.
Cheaper and with more choice, think things will pick up when clean up is completed
There is not one good restaurant in the town unless you like Rockfish which my friends own and I like it.
Can't agree with this, there is not a top 5 star restaurant (how many elsewhere? how many of us want 5 star?) but many that offer an acceptable level of food, choice and service
Surin, Cherngtalay, Kata would be my choice if not Patong.
Considered these area's but in my opinion they were just that little bit further away from Patong than Kamala
Cheers!

Going slightly off topic but still I suppose describing my early expat experiences, had a long chat with tirak yesterday, talking about her early childhood, which seemed to mirror many books I have read by Thai girls. I thought it might be useful to share this with you as it might make new guys consider more the girl they are meeting in the bar etc.
When she was 10 her father died in a car accident, leaving her brother of 15, sisters of 14, 12 & 8yrs. After a year her mother was having problems trying to earn enough money to keep them in school so got her brother to work away and send h ome as much money as he could afford, she took the older sister, 15yrs with her and found work in another town, where she would be away for one week back for one week. This left three girls of 9, 11 and 13 on there own for an entire week in a remote farm house. Tirak said this was okay because her mother had arranged for their uncle, who lived in a nearby village to call in once a week to check they were okay. Only thing was Uncle used to arrive at night time completely drunk and would try to rape them!! She said this became a big game, because they could always hear his motorbike coming from far away so they would find good places to hide so he couldn't get them. Only thing was, that one day he found the oldest daughter and raped her (she was 13!!). I was of course shocked and said what happened to him after this? she said no one was mad because it wasn't his fault because he was drunk!! After this they would go way out into the rice fields to hide and he never caught any of them again, this lasted for almost 2 years.
I cannot consider how this must have felt at the time or how it could affect her or her sisters for their future but I was most shocked by the very matter of fact way she described it, how she thought this is very typical for most of the girls we meet in the Bangla Road, it has made me think that maybe this has some influence over why they become so materialistic, how when we consider education, theirs is so much more in the school of life than in the classroom. I also think that even in just 3 weeks of living here my learning curve is just so much greater than when holidaying, I always respected the expats opinions on why bg's did this or that but once you have lived here as long as they have, my advice to newbies or holidayers is listen to them do not just come back with "why are expats views so cynical" its not cynisism its a better understanding and more knowledge gained from having many bg's as friends and not just ST girlfriends.

Spot on there Dodger, the reason for your tilaks talking about this in a fasion that made you think this was quite normal was the fact that its not anything anyone is suprised by, many things like her story happen as almost a regular part of life growing up, expecially for a country girl.
I'm going on 5 yrs with my gf and I have a lot of contact with her family and friends, many stories of growing up include incredible hardships. Growning up poor in thailand is not an easy stint by any means, girls expercially recieve harsh treatment from all sides of the family is very common, while the males often are given excuses for everything we would consider unacceptable...it is the way things are or at the very least not a uncommon story.
I'm glad to see you bringing up things that are maybe a little out of the box persay as it sheds light into all aspects of living in thailand and learning along the way the more hidden side of things...Thanks for sharing.

Dont agree with this one Dodge.. Kamala is the break in capitol of Phuket for farangs getting done by the locals.. Also even knocking people off bikes late at night on the Patong Kamala rd for muggings at one point !!!
In your gated community style place I wouldnt call it an issue but with a house in a soi it is a more burglarised ares for sure..

Ao told me logic that blew me away.
she said that when thai's get divorced if they have a son it lives with the mother, but if they have a daughter she lives with the father. the logic being that the mother will get a new thai bf and when the girl becomes 12-15, the new bf will want to have sex with her. unbelievable

Yeah known lots of girls been raped by family or close family friends.. I know one girl who was sold to a thai brothel owner by her mother at 15.. never seen her parents since..
I remember once with Wifey she came flying out one time and we had to go right that second to pick up her 11 y/o niece.. I kinda grumbled at being roped into something but we get over to where the niece lived in a shack where the father was a mechanic and had a workshop.. Father was off on an errand and there were some very suspicious guys hanging round who had come to allegedly get work done on a car.. Kim picked up the niece and brought her to our place to do homework (she wanted to adopt her as her sister took crap care of her kids).. Later it was explained that she had called and thought it highly likely of we were not there in 10 mins that the 11 y/o would have been molested..
What I dont get is how the local society / community doesnt stone the offenders to death.. Far to much mai pen rai around the whole child abuse situation here !!

I'm guessing you haven't kept up the karaoke..... big dissapointment since you had started so well with a 'hip-swinging" performance.
your last post touched some heart strings as my girl (who you know) left home at 9 years old - it took some time to get the details out of her but seems she was scheduled to *marrry* a much older guy.
all goes to show that , often, it is a different world than the one we know.
Anyway, seems like the move is going well - i get ever more jealous each day - so best wishes to all 3 of you - see you next month.

Im not going to go into loads of detail but ive had a fair insight on the ground in isaan so to speak and also had quite a few stories relayed to me
U can add to the list of goings on:
Successful women coming back from their trips or insitu fcuking young thai boys 16-20 years old
Men (gay/ bi) fcuking young thai boys, as young as 14
But ironically if a thai boy gets caught seeing a girlfriend (without being married) then its shot guns all the way and payment required and we're talking about 15 years old
All of these goings on seem to be acceptable
ive even been asked if any of my friends would be interested in fcuking a virgin for 30,000 baht
life in phuket in more ways than one is a far cry from the real thailand, a bit like living in a farang influenced cocoon

Still be careful dodger - gated community adds a certain amount of security but not a lot - its mostly for show.
recent story: million dollar house, gated community, owners away for long periods but staff kept on for upkeep of the house. Thai gangster moves in to his 'free' house and proceeds to break everything and leave drugs and bullets around. Staff try to stand up to him and threatened with said gun.
Won't/can't say much more but i have a feeling he chose the wrong house. The locals may fear this guy but he doesnt know what he ****ed with....
