Sorry, but dont fall for this. I was told all sorts of things in the Thai embassy in Sydney. But when we went into immigration in Phuket it was a totally different story. Explained to the boss woman there that the embassy in Sydney said this and that.

Basically her response was "overseas embassies can say what they like, its what we say here in Thailand that counts!!!" Didnt really bother me all that much, but just showing that things will probably not be as you are expecting.

Also just a note on the 'source as Gospel' as it made me smile.. Once you have been dealing with Thai authority a while you will understand that things dont quite work that way.. I know statements made by Consuls and Embassies do change and even moreso on the ground here getting 2 or more officials to agree on an interpretation or rule or to implement them the same way twice is often kind of maddening. I personally have direct info from the UK consul in writing that locally immigration view very differently. Though I am sure in the simple case of a Non Imm O retirement (Is that an O-A ??) that it merely requires proof of assets and not proof of bringing it in.. That fits with earlier comments that you just show it each year and what about if you dont spend that much in a year..

Good luck.

Thanks Lil and Steve...

We understand about "gospel" we all know there are many versions of the gospels...lol...

It appears we have to come in on a non Immigrant multi-entry type "O" then transfer that to an "O" retirement...non immigrant...which is 12 months renewable upon proof again of the 800,000 baht...the 800,000 doesn't have to stay there...we can whittle that down over the 12 months but have to have 800,000 for renewal the next year.

Don't intend to have much left over to be wanting to take out of the country as we'll only bring in what we need...which poses another problem...how much to bring in, in total, is it better to bring it in on the drip feed ie; as you need it, or one lump sum deposited in a Phuket account?...I have seen discussions about this before in the forum, but with the swing in the US dollar to be likely and a fluctuating Australian Dollar and bank fees then there's Thai Banks...decisions decisions decisions...

I guess the 800,000 baht is an amount that the Thais deem you should be able to live on for 12 months...ROTFLMAO...Robbies school fees alone are AUD $11,000 p/a and that is out of the $28,000 (800,000baht) all that leaves is beer money...

But we do understand that in Thailand everything doesn't run "as smooth as silk" as they say...but that's life...If it was easy everyone would be doing it...LOL All we can do is try our hardest to get it right!!!

Even the Applications forms are different between Sydney and Brisbane...under instructions from Bill, the Consul General, to check the box marked Non Imm at the top right of the form...after two days of tearing my hair out and looking like and idiot I realized I'd downloaded from the Sydney site and I was being instructed by Bill, from Brisbane. When I downloaded the form from Brisbane Voila there it was...the box to be ticked as plain as day...the same one does not exist on the Sydney form.

More useless information...

I've been told they only want to see that you have at least 800k in aThai account on the day you apply for the visa...the fact you could draw it all out and spend it the next day doesn't seem to matter.

This interests me as I'm going to be 50 in a couple of months

This is to our understanding as well...

When's your birthday...I'll be turning 50 on the 8th of January...might be worth a bit of a celebration at the MTB

You think the Thai Consul in Kuala Lumpur will accept Visa Forms with the Hull address? I doubt it.

Hey Dodger!!! Just wondering if you have come across any more insights on the move to LOS. Becoming a new dad and all would have thrown up all sorts of interesting little problems, like registering Alex's birth certificate in Britan and LOS. Please let us know as I have found the thread facinating!!!

Okaydokee, haven’t written much on here for quite awhile cos I thought that posting away about my little life was getting a bit self obsessed but as you can see I don’t need much encouragement.

Just a quick catch up post to sort of briefly describe the average week living here and to say that even after 10 months I still love every minute spent on the island. Living back in the UK, shite weather, same old same old every week with very little highlights, when I telephone home to speak to friends and ask what’s been happening over the last 4 months etc, usual answer not much new or some new shop opened. I do not miss all the political crap living in UK, here things are so much more disorganised and anything can be sorted with the right contacts and a few bahts, this type of system suits me just fine.

I usually start my day at about 10 o’clock unless having been out on the lash the night before and then it is later. I have sort of gone a little bit native and notice that my blood has thinned a bit as I am nowhere near as hot here as I used to be when coming on holiday, never use aircon even on the hottest day and notice holidaymakers complaining about the heat or sweating when I’m okay. Not liking spicy food much I initially dodged hot foods but have noticed that I quite often order medium spicy grub now, I eat about 50:50 falang and Thai food.

I still live quite a lot like a holidaymonger, going to Patong a couple of nights per week, more if friends are over, eat out 75% of the time but have taken quite a liking to getting food from the street vendors, I always find this interesting as I try to order it in my limited Thai and then never really know what I am getting until I get home to eat it. Initially I had thought that I would go to Thai language lessons but never got round to it, I sort of learn on the hoof, teelak teaches me 2 or 3 new words or sentences everyday but unless they are ones you use on a daily basis you soon forget them. I learnt to count by only speaking Thai when asking for my clubs from the caddy when playing golf, which we try to do every Thursday, I have learnt colours by speaking Thai when playing pool. We also pop downtown Kamala about 2 or 3 times a week for a few beers and a couple of games. I like living in Kamala as it is a small village especially during low season and you get to know your neighbours well. I live close to the Muslim village and everyone warned me about living near them??? Never had any problems with the local Muslims, they are just Thais with a different religion, I use their shops, laundry service, bike repairs etc and always have a laugh with any I come into contact with.

Developed a few good places I like going and visit every so often, not too often to get bored, love going to Joe’s Downstairs bar, settling in for a long session by the sea crashing onto the rocks and at some point in the procedure ordering pulled pork and nachos. Talking of food, have tried the massive Faulty Burger with extra bacon and cheese and found I could eat this fairly easily, but have now put Faulty’s on my list of must go to regular bars for their Massuman Curry, it has got to be the best on the island, Crusty has got a really good chef there for good portion sized well cooked honest straightforward grub. Like taking Teelak out once a week for a nice meal and am working my way round all the better reputation restaurants, most of which Uretheman has managed at some point in his career. For a bit of nostalgia we go once every couple of months to the Green Man at Chalong for a Sunday Roast, even the bar smells exactly like a UK pub, it’s a copy of a Georgian style building from the UK plus a great beer garden, reminds me of all the pubs in my life my Mum and Dad used to take me too when I was a kid, making me sit outside with a coke and bag of crisps.

One of the other regular things I enjoy a lot is not being regular and trying out the many activities available on the island, from wake boarding, go carting, white water rafting, rock climbing, snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing and so on and so on, its great just popping out and in 5 or 10 minutes be partaking in some activity you have not had the chance to do back home.

Being a dad now at my excessive age is also one of the best things I have done, having a nipperoo you get far more interaction and acceptance from the local Thais, I do not mean that you should all rush out and get a little’un but it changes the dynamics of your relationship with the locals, I came here to learn about another culture, to integrate where possible not to just move into another little Britain. I do find that I am still a little sceptical when first befriended by a Thai, think this is because I am always looking firstly for what angle is in it for him/her, slowly losing this but do still find myself slightly guarded.

I do not monger whilst in Patong, as we all know the grapevine is far too good and the longer you live here the more you are known to too many sets of eyes, so look forward to my little visa run holidays every 90 days, we just got back from Cambodia, Wow had the greatest of times, and suppose this is another great thing about living here, I have visited Malaysia, Cambodia & Mynamar this year and will probably try Vietnam next run, although Phnom Pehn was such a great experience it may well get a second visit. I decided to do a separate thread for our PP visit cos it was so brilliant and for anyone coming over to stay for a few months make this trip part of your itiniery.

Friends you make by the dozen, mainly expats as long term friends/acquaintances, but of course you have a great flow of people coming over for their holidays and its great to meet new people and all the old faces you have met on previous tours. I have made quite a few friends with Thai locals but have found that they do see you as a local lending Bank when they have any ‘ploblems’ to date I have always been paid back, got two outstanding loans at the moment but they are not due back until end of month, why do Thais never consider asking their own banks? I do not just refer to ordinary working Thais but to guys with quite large businesses, have a little cashflow problem but have no pre-arranged overdraft facility with their business bankers. One guy told me it’s because the banks have limited cash and takes too long to okay it or release funds but I don’t know.

Anyway rabbiting on for too long better dash the suns just come out and we are off to get a better barbeque!!!

Nice update..

You say you have tried the white water rafting ?? Was that the one up in Phang Gna / Krabi region.. With the option of elephant ride up and raft down ?? Now that its been rainy season a while I was thinking of going and giving it a go.. Is it really wild (and fun) or tame ?? Would a GF be ok with it ??

Used to do some rock climbing but in my leaner days.. Dont know how I would do at that now (though did win a race to the top on the safari one v a real fit looking bugger.. Anything for a free drink).. Again was that the Krabi one(s) though ?? I wasnt aware of a rock climbing school on the island itself.

One I keep meaning to do is the john grey starlight canoe paddle.. Supposed to be really good with your tilaak.. Very romantic..
