Phuket for families?
Dear all,
First of all, congratulations for this site, I've been searching posts for the last few days and found lots of interesting information about life in Phuket.
We are a young spanish/french family with a small baby (6m) and we are considering a job placement in Phuket. I've seen that there is a vibrant nightlife and the place seems like a lot of fun for singles. But how about rising a baby overthere? Is Phuket a child-friendly place? Is there much for us to do?.
Also, my husband has been offered a salary of $2,500 and I'm concerned that it might not be enough for us to live confortably. I would appreciate your views in that so you can put my mind at ease!
If you have any idea of what salary range goes for chefs in Phuket would be great.
Many thanks and sorry about my english

The salary is ok and you can live comfortably on that.. I would think its pretty high in the range depending on responsibility for a farang chef..
Phuket would be fine until school age.. I wouldnt put my childrenb through school here unless at the best international schools which is not cheap.

I would have thought Phuket would be a great place to bring up small kids. It's safe, Thais love them, it's warm and has all the facilities you need.

Hehe, yes most women here cover themselves Ninja style, but I don't necessarily have to. Many western women dress normally, it's ok as long as you don't show your arms, legs or cleavage.
I can't wait to be able to wear miniskirts, shorts, tiny tops and bikinis again!

Gez was being a little cheeky. He is hoping to see pics of you in your bikini and shorts. Actually, I don't think its only Gez that wants to see your pics.

Ok, Guys...! I will post them only if you keep answering my questions as I get closer to my move to phuket (I'll have hundred of qestions) , bikini, shorts, miniskirts, whatever, I have absolutely no shame...
5555,
Deal?
Noooo just kidding and teasing!, my husband wouldn't be too happy about that...Anywayz, posted a pic of me in my profile, that should be enough!
Stevem, ANYTHING is liberal when compared to the mentality in Qatar: No beer, no pork, no nice clothing in public, no holding hands with husband in public, no clubs, no life, no nothing.
The offer is not formal yet, we won't know until next week if we are moving to Phuket for sure. Wish us luck and hopefully see you there!

Good luck with the offer Mariposita, I hope you get this post.
After Qatar, Phuket will be a dramatic improvement for you and your family and I wish you the best. Personally, I think Phuket would be ideal for a family. Lots of things to do, fresh air, good food and a chance to live your life as you want to and not as the Muslim faith wants you to.
Hopefully you will find a trust-worthy Nanny if you get to Phuket that will enable you and your husband to get out on your own together.
I hope you stick with the forum, I hope you get the job on Phuket and if you do, please keep us posted on any problems you may find in the re-location.
Good luck for next week!

The salary is ok depending on what hotel, experience your husband has, scope of responsibility.
He should inquire whether the company will pay taxes on his salary, if not then the money is not that much. If they can give a small amount for housing and or car.
Will they pay relocation fees?
Just some questions to ask, also please refer to ehotelier.com in the forum section as many people there can answer questions about your husbands work.
Cheers!

Utherman, funny that you mention ehotelier, because we had the hardest time posting a message there. You see, I think it is banned to post threats in that website from Qatar (very very strong internet cesorship here, I'm surprised I can acces THIS website), so I had to get my brother in Spain to post the message for us, which he did yesterday, we are hoping to get some answers soon...
This is what my husband has proposed for the job after the interview: $3000 (although if they put it down to 2500 we MIGHT accept), housing, medical insurance, relocation fees and flights home (Paris or Madrid) once a year.
I don't think it sounds like he's asking for the moon, does it?

Looks like you've done your research and worked out costs/living expenses etc , hope things turn out O.K.
Will definitely be a big "culture change" , I used to work In Saudi Arabia and know how restrictive life can be in that area.
