Driving to Penang

I am driving to Penang next week.I was just wondering if any BM'S have done this trip and do they Know if I need any special documentation for the car.I have driven in Malaysia many times but have never taken my own car over the border.Does it matter if the car is in my company name?

Cheers

I assume that the car in question is Thai registered. You used to not be able to take Thai registered vehicles across the border, due to the registration not being able to read in Malaysia as it contains Thai characters.

I believe this may have changed, but you need to get a letter from some government body which provides a translation of the registration. Better check before you leave for the journey.

I was told I couldnt take a vehicle I didnt own overseas.. I was on a borrowed bike and no one even asked to see anything about it.. Just looked at my passport and let me through.

I assume that log (blue) book in your name with the passport etc should be ok but dont blame me if it isnt.

Ohh also I had no insurance.. I was warned that having no insurance in Malaysia was a big risk and that I could buy it at the border for just a couple of days.. When I got to the border I was tired and confused and just kept on going..

I would ask about your insurance for a short hop there if your going to cover all your bases as I dont think Thai insurance covers international by default.

hi richie22,
just did a road trip by car from phuket to penang and back 3 weeks ago , didn't have any problems and that was using a rental car , as far as number plates are concerned , as long as the car has the white plates , as opposed to the red ones , you should be ok , as far as insurance goes , you will need to produce the cars registration document in order to obtain it , insurance is available at the malaysian side of the border on the right hand side , where is the duty free place.

have a nice trip
