Yeah, I know. But the school supposedly helps organise your work permit.
I just want to build up some experience teaching in Koh Samui. Even without pay.

Hmm a TEFL along with being a native english speaker would be enough i suppose to get a teaching job in LOS? But english teachers doesnt rate very high in Thailand thats for sure.
I know there is alot of volunteer work to be done tho, but unfortunatly i think that's mostly from US. If you are a US citizen there are a few ways that i know of tho for teaching english. You are getting food for the day and experience for a lifetime. BUT you will be working in rural Thailand. This also requires a 3 months very intensive course in Thai language and if you fail, all you get is a ticket back to US again.

Technically to get a WP I understand your supposed to have a degree.. Though I also hear that the industry does turn a blind eye to the photocopied Khao San Rd ones in the low and middle paying end of the market.

I've got a degree (Bsc Computer Science) and I'm busy doing my TEFL course. But, I have no teaching experience. So I'm actually looking for volunteer work to build up experience before looking for an 'OK' paying job.
So if anyone has any places I could try, I'd be extremely grateful. Oh, by the way, I know I'm from South Africa but I am white and english is my first language

You have a Bsc and now you want to teach English for free. Have you thought about approaching the uni's in Bangkok and just asking about teaching comp sc.

You don't need experience to teach. Get your TEFL as thats the most important thing, as having a degree means crap. It doesn't mean you can teach.
Anyway - once you have your TEFL, I can easily point you in the right direction of teaching, and getting paid. It doesn't matter that you don't have experience, as long as you try your best. One thing about teaching, is, if you are not going to try your best for the kids, then don't bother to teach. Experience will come. Jump in and have some fun, thats what I did
Love teaching

Having a degree might mean crap but its a requirement of a work permit.. I dont think you will find many of the high end schools with real pay (60k up) offering positions to people with fake degrees.
As stated the low end schools hire pretty much anyone that says they will try as far as I can see.

That sound's awesome. I had this impression that work is difficult to find in Thailand unless you had experience. Trust me, I would give this my all...

Never actually thought about it. I'm really trying to get out of computers after all the stress I've had to endure. I was thinking about teaching younger classes as I'm always told I'm awesome around kids by everyone and I practically turn into a bit of a goofball (not in bad way, but it should make kids feel more at ease and learning more fun)

Of course how you live life is entirely up to you but at 25 and with a BSc seems a little young to be tired of the rat race.. Of course at that age you can have a few years of low paying but experience jobs and still be able to return to your trade..
Personally with good comp skills I would probably look at 6 months work and 6 months living in Thailand on the money than living full time on low low money.

Not in South Africa, I work like a dog here for just about what I would earn in Thailand teaching
I want a change of pace for awhile and then re-evaluate what I want to do. I would always probably work on my own IT projects, in my spare time. Probably go into business for myself in the near future. I also have a few websites that are bringing in a decent amount every month. So teaching would just be a new experience doing something that I know I would be good at.

Make sure you go to the website - www.ajarn.com and sign up and read the web postings. Most of them there are friendly and helpful.

I am considering getting my CELTA soon-as, then, when the next work crisis hits, head off to LOS where the jobs are poorly paid but easy to find. Do a couple of years for experience before looking to better paying countrys like China to rebuild some capital. I have a degree in physics/biology and a masters in physiology as well as an extensive publication record in medical research.
That's the plan anyway.

Also look at www.daveseslcafe.com and www.buxiban.com. both great sites for different regions in Asia.

Wow, I arrived in Bangkok about 2 weeks ago and within 2 days I had a job at a government school. Just finished my first week of teaching and I love it.
School is taking care of my work permit, but they said that because they are a government school, I don't really need it. They said they would put a stamp in my passport saying that I teach for them and when I apply for my next visa and I should have no problems getting a 1 year Non-Im "O" visa and won't be bothered by anyone.
The pay isn't bad either, but I do work quite a few hours.

Some minor points..
When you apply for your next visa means application outside of the country ?? Also surely you get a Non Imm B visa ?? Or maybe teaching is not considered business ??? I doubt you would go for an Non Imm O unless you were married.
If you dont have a WP you still do visa runs.. I think a Gov school can get you a WP without min wage issues though so push them for it.. With a WP you dont have visa runs and its a big assist.
Did you get a Teaching License from the Min of Education ?? I think this is required for the WP..
Try to push for your WP to make your life easier and increase your foothold etc.. When chosing between keeping a teacher they have a WP for and one they dont the WP teacher would probably win.
Good luck with it.. Might want to PM Alfie as hes on the hunt.

Thats not really legal. Its an offence for anyone other than immigration and embassies/consulates to make entries in a passport. Definitely push for the WP.

You MUST have a Non Imm B stamp in your passport and then you can get a Official Teaching Job. You will have to provide your Degree (fake or not) to get the Work Permit.
Just because its a Government School, doesn't mean they have special privelages. I know I worked for a couple

Oooh, I knew it sounded to good at first. I will push for the full work permit. They said it wouldn't be a problem with my qualifications and also the school seems to like me alot.
I'm having loads of fun teaching, it feels more like play than work. Will keep you updated on the work permit stuff.
I would need to leave the country to get my non imm "B" visa. Planning a visa run for next month some time. Not going to bother with getting the 30 day extension on my tourist visa.
