Better ADSL

I am currently on a 256 ADSL (TOT) in Kamala, a bit down in the village, and it well... reeks.

As of late, I have gotten some requests from clients who want to contact me over Skype and also want me to do some remote desktopping over VPN. But my connection is fit for neither (Yes, I have tried). Does anyone have any experience with using these functions in Phuket? Preferably in Kamala but also elsewhere. Is the connection considered better in Patong than Kamala? (Guess it has to do with proximity to an exchange too, but just thought I’d ask). Will an upgrade to 512 make it significantly better?

If these problems continue, I might just have to move (again!).

We have TOT Silver Service- supposed to run at 526 but normally goes about 150. his is fairly good for Patong. The exchanges in Phuket are creaking at the seams and out of date, with no announcement of upgrades as yet. Will be a case of grin and bear it until then. I'm going to speak to the phone company about the speed of the service but am not holding my breath.

I have TOT 256K in Patong and I find it pretty good, very stable (when I pay the bill) and a resonable speed. I regularly VPN back to a box in Scotland and although it's not quick, it is managable, and I can actually remote control a server there (with screen refresh overhead) and happily work away for a few hours in the evenings.

Yeah. Heard some stories too. Also the "super highway" from Phuket to Bangkok looks to be a well-trodden path.

I get from 100 - 150 on this test:

http://bandwidth.thaivisa.com/

So I guess there is no big improvement switching to 512 huh?. My main problem is that the connection is too unstable to use with Skype.

On the bandwidth test above I get 209kbps, which I'm pretty happy about.

My experience with connecting back to UK is that the evenings and overnight are much much quicker. Also, as soon as the workers leave back in UK and local network usage on the LAN drops I pick up dramatically.

Phuket is not the place to be for consistent/high speed internet, which is why I am seriously thinking about relocating to possibly Singapore or Malaysia...don't really want to, but I can't make do with crappy connections goign forward.

TOT is well known for its suckage. Try and get TT&T line if you can - much better.

I got 512 Ji-Net on TT&T and skype is fine, we regularly conf call between several countries.

I'll do those test over the course of a few days to see what sort of difference I get. Not scientific, but maybe useful.

That is pretty good, cant remember what I used to get in Patong, but I seem to recall just getting to triple figures at times, now that was crap!!!!

To make you jealous, I just ran that test from here and got 1.35 Mbps, but the net has seemed alittle sluggish tonite, its normally better than that.

Yeah, I'm happy with it. My biggest worry is that I'll be moving at the end of June and it will then be pot luck as to what I'll end up with!!

Dont even get me started on that one

Used to have TT&T in my old home, and it seemed alot more stable than TOT. Of course, it could also be that I lived closer to the exchange, but I have heard (and experienced) many horrors with TOT.

In the daytime I sometimes have to use dial-up since I cant even connect. And try get a technician to show up. My landlord has TT&T and she could be willing to switch if I threaten her with moving out...

I am connecting on a TOT line using both goldcyber and goldbiz accounts.. They both seem to top out the same but the goldcyber clogs up with higher contention (more people sharing)..

I am right now on TOT gold cyber (long stopry I need to go to the office to have the biz reactivated) and am clocking 388 on that test but get 100 KB (800kbps) fairly often on downloads..

I have had a long struggle to sort this out and can say with fair certainty that its all about line quality and line distance.. I have spent a fair bit on replacing cabling and bithced like a child at them to work on my lines (it finally worked).. Once the line is stable and good I am now able to skype, stream music (video is a problem still) etc.. Of course its not 1 Mb real speeds but I am happy with that..

Hobbsy, if you dont mind me asking, whereabouts do you stay?

Been thinking about moving to maybe an apt. complex with a good line coz I've done my share of b1tching and now I just want an ok line and get on with my biz. How much do you pay? TT&T + ISP for a 512?
