Stein falsely package deals excessive drinking and prostitution with Thailand. The crux of his argument is:

"Thailand is bad because..." then names the consequences of excessive drinking and prostitution.

This is a logical fallacy. Excessive drinking and the use of prostitutes can and does happen in any country. If you drink 5 days per week in New York, you're going to be in rough shape, just like you would in Thailand.

Let me illustrate the logical fallacy by putting his argument in reverse:

"Living in North America. Maybe it's not worth it?" "I see men making and drinking moonshine 7 days per week in Alabama, unemployed, and having sex with floozies. What a horrible lifestyle these people live in America. Examine your heads because living in America is definitely not worth it."

To put it to rest, drinking, prostitutes, and Thailand are not unseparable peices. When I come up in May for four months to train muay thai and attend a language school, I will be doing zero drinking, and definitely no paying for girls. Girls pay my meals and drinks back here at home, and I'll expect them to do the same for this handsome guy in Thailand too

Is English your first language? I'm sorry if there is some type of communication barrier here. Please re-read what I have written, and if you still "beg to differ" then I will explain the point I am making, because it has nothing to do with what you've written. I will do my best to write in a clear and simple manner.

The naked truth about farang life

Mangosauce have published a survey about expats or ex. expats living in Thailand.

Interesting reading but also read the comments after the survey to get other points.

I was serious with my remarks and not sarcastic. I noticed many members of this board do not speak English as a first language, and as a result I have seen communication problems. I know it's hard to understand someone's intentions over the internet, but note that in my post I was both a) apologetic and b) offering assistance.

Bryan, I sure hope you are kidding with that remark, if not you are full of yourself and you have no place in Thailand. You will go through with this with your training in Muay Thai which is to show humility and not be brash and say how handsome you are.

I hope you learn to be humble, treat girls with respect and don't make them pay for your meals.

Hey, you omitted the smiley from your quotation of my post The remark about girls at home is true, but I really have no solid expectations as to what will go on in Thailand wrt women.

I think you're assuming I'm a jerk or something. I don't make women do anything and I certainly treat them like a gentleman would. It's just my view that being a gentleman does not mean letting a woman use you for money, walk all over you, be her tampon, or whatever. And it happens that in my--albeit short--experience, women respect you more if you're not a doormat.

And hey, I'm humble. I put that little smiley there to indicate I was joking. I'm not actually very handsome... just sexy

Sweetness and light.

Well, haven't posted for a while.
I have been too busy doing road trips on my Yamaha XVS1100A and seeing a bit of Oz.
However, I still do my 3 month pilgrimage to Thailand. Got the g/f, business, rented house thing going etc.
It is interesting that when someone like mrstein posts about the other side of Thailand (the one where paradise has warts) he gets slammed.
Thailand is a pretty good lifestyle if you manage to keep a low profile. As soon as you run afoul of the law, your neighbours, officialdom etc, you can be in deep shit and you can't (contrary to popular belief) always buy your way out of it.
I speak to a lot of ex-pats each time I go to Thailand. I have met a few interesting guys and a couple that are really contented. Mainly the expats I have met though, run out of conversation once you get past booze and sex.
So,just because someone clouds your fantasy, it doesn't mean that he doesn't have a point.
So far, for me, Thailand is a place that I like to visit but I wouldn't like to live there full-time.

Steve

I think senior 123 is old and wise enough to know what to do. Besides he seems a lot more level headed than you.

If you say so

When you see a girl wearing alot of gold - that is one of the first warning signs you must be careful of. I'm sure senor123 knows what he is doing more than you.

The more gold a BG likes to show the more the warning bells ring louder

Phew! Well, that was a long read! How to sum it up?

I have been to 108 countries last count. Lived and worked in 46. Don't want to live in the UK for reasons I have stated before elsewhere on the forum and now it would appear Thailand isn't all I thought it would be!

I'm 45, apparently going to be bored out of my tree if I retire anywhere, anytime soon and end up eating my own underpants, gibbering in a bar talking to a load of perverts..........Hang on! Things are looking up a bit!

I'll live my life how I want too thanks. Each to thier own. I listened to both sides of the story, well, opinions actually. They were aired in open forum and I found it an interesting read actually! I haven't been influenced in anyway, as nobody was trying to influence anyone I am guessing. I know in myself I am strong enough in mind and character to do what I want, where I want, when I want and with who I want.

Up to you! Everyone knows when they are somewhere where they want to be! .

House hunting in Baghdad then! I'll start tomorrow!

There are valid points on both sides.. Thailand is not paradise but its certainly got a lot of advantages..

One point Steve does make that definately fits me is how the climate appeals to N Europeans and if your from a relatively mild climate that takes away one of the big appeals... I absolutely HATE the winter, and in the UK thats about 9 months of the year so being able to live with a pool and in the warm is a huge plus to any country. I can entirely understand how others may enjoy the seasons, or a trade wind (I have to say Balis climate kicked Phukets ass, warm, dry, no humidity, cool evenings, no mosquitos where he lived.. Superb) or whatever appeals to them.

Hi Echo,
Like many things in Thailand, the photo of my g/f does not represent the person.
She is actually very conservative, likes working in the garden, likes me to keep whats left of my hair cut short, doesn't drink (anymore) and doesn't smoke.
She only wears the gold when we go out, if its not in the pawn shop that is.
Together we have a small business (for about 1 year now and it is not a bar) and I have known her for 2.
However, as I stated before, just having a relationship with a Thai girl would not be enough to make me want to live in Thailand as I am really happy in my own country.
Making judgment calls from a photo, especially one of me he he he, is probably a bit of a tough call.
I wish I had one of Denver's oblongs to wear!!!

Steve
