Phonelines / ADSL in Patong

I ordered ADSL from TOT for 2 months ago, unfortunately I also moved to a new apartment. Few days ago I were told that TOT don't have any numbers available for my part of Nanai road.

I also ordered a phoneline with TT&T, I got confirmation in just one day and they delivered one week later. Yesterday I went to order an additional line with TT&T which I will use for ADSL, since TOT couldnt deliver.

No problem! But I were also told this was their _last_ available number for my area. I feel lucky.

For the ADSL (service fee, rental fee of router) you pay around 800 bath/month with TOT and 1400 baht/month with TT&T.

TOT is cheaper but my experiences with TT&T is a lot better and faster service.

For internet access, I will use Jasmine Internet for 3500 baht/month for unlimited hours. Loxinfo charge 6000 baht/month.

This is for the basic 128/64 ADSL line, it is possible to get more high speed connection but you also pay more.

I use IPStar. It’s a two-way satellite connection system from Loxinfo. The speed is 256/128. The installation did cost me 10 000 and 3000.- per month for unlimited time and max 750Mb traffic. 1500Mb cost 5000.- per month. Not cheap – but it works fine and the speed is indeed 256/128.

Only complain - They promise delivery within 3 days - it took 29 days to get it ready to use.

Sounds like a good alternative depending on your needs.

I dont like traffic limits, I downloaded about 6 Gb of data in December which had been impossible with this solution, but on an average month, I may be within the limits.

And many parts of the island are out of lines or ADSL is not available at all, so IPStar may be the only choice.

I had problem with ADSL during the first 3 weeks and then it worked perfect, the first three weeks I couldnt use FTP upload or SSL encrypted websites but since then no problem.

I got an offer that I could upgrade to 256 kb without any changes in my monthly fee. I send them the fax accepting this but I havent heard anything yet. When you accept this offer you have to stay with this ISP for 6 months.

I could get 512 kb for 6000 baht/month If I wanted. (Before you got 256 kb for that rate.)

I guess the prices for ADSL is going down and that is good news. I heard rumours about TOT offering ADSL for 500 baht month, I am not sure if this is for Thailand only or full internet access. (But I don't have TOT phoneline so I don't bother to check it out yet.)

ADSL info

Hi,

I will be moving to Phuket in a few months. I saw your discussion about ADSL and was hoping you can help me with a few questions.

I will need a RELIABLE high speed internet connection for work. I am a daytrader and there for reliability is a must. What I mean is that if it goes down for a day or even a week once in a while, it is not the end of the world. But if it goes on and off many times a day that will be a killer.

I would like rent a house or an apartment preferable in Patong.

What are my options with high speed internet?
Which once are more reliable and how reliable are they?
Which areas would be better for highspeed internet?
Is there good satellite internet?

Thanks in advance,

Fire

Hi,

There is 2mbit connection available for 900 baht month now but as I understand it is shared with other people so it is not a true 2 mbit connection. Also one friend of mine called me yesterday and complained about ftp is not working and timeouts on many occassions, so I guess the cheap options available now is not that reliable.

I use 256 kb with ji-net (Jasmine internet) and it works almost fine, I got disconnected sometimes but I think it is my router who freeze and need a restart.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Nicke.

Do you know if the satellite internet in reliable?
Is there an ADSL phone lines shortage now?

Thanks - Fire

If the satellite TV is anything to go by, you loose the signal frequently due to cloud and heavy rain.

TOT now offer very cheap service 1000 baht for 1024/256 and apparently not the same shared solution and TT&T which is getting very mixed results (2 Mbit line giving 40Kbps)..

I am currently TOT and JI net but intend on dropping JI if the above actually works anything like promised.

High Speed Internet Connection

Hi Guys,
I wonder if there are any yearly contracts signing up for adsl or can you sign off anytime?

In the US where I lived the past 10 years they have these insane yearly contracts and penalize you for breaking it early. Just wonder if these companies operate the same?

I am looking at an aparment in Phuket. Could anyone recommend some apartments that are low cost (but nice) and access to adsl?

Thx a bunch

Johan

No, normally you pay per month althought I agreed to stay with Jasmine for 6 months when I got my free upgrade from 128 to 256kbit. (The same time TOT and TT&T were launching their cheaper options)

My friend jumped on this 2mbit connection for 1000 baht/month and he has a lot of problems, he used 256kbit before. (He called me about downtime last week and asked if I had problem)

My ADSL is working fine but I get slow line sometimes in the evenings lately so my radio feed from Sweden get interupted every minute or so for few seconds.

One advice; when you look for apartment and find one you like, make sure with either TT&T or TOT that they have numbers available before moving in. I like the apartments where I live. When you arrive I can check availability.

How is the TOT for 1000 baht working?

Hi LivinLOS - did you try the TOT for 1000 baht? or do you know if it works well?

Is there a wait to get it in Patong?

The 1000 baht deal worked bad few months ago but I guess it is better now, I will check again with a friend who have it. In the past FTP upload did not work, thus, update a website was not possible. Download gave you only ~56k but that for each download, if you downloaded multiple files each download would be around ~56k.

I will order this for MTB but I need to know ftp uploading is working first.

Had one meeting with them concerning Home technology for a building project ie Satellite TV, Voice over IP and broadband solutions.

They have a good reputation, were helpful and generally pretty upto date with what's going on in Phuket.
