Advice on staying for 6 months in Phuket
Hi Guys,
How much per month would it cost for me to rent an apartement/small house and live for about 6 months in Phuket..??
I would probably look in the Kata/Karon areas although Patong could also be an option (but maybe dearer..??)
As I dont drink much (maybe a couple of beers a night and my tgf drinks even less) I reckon I could probably get by on 2000 to 2500baht per day and pay about 12000 to 15000baht per month for a place to stay.
This will probably be between May and November next year after I finish an engineering job in PNG.
All up around AU$20 to 25,000.00 for the 6 months = 56 to 700,000baht.
What do all you long timers/expats etc reckon.
cheers - Les

There are a few very detailed discussions on the cost of living in Phuket on the board. Have you found them??

Thats about close on prices...
Live a calm life and 60 is easily doable.. Live a mad one and double that isnt enough.. Absolute min I could think would be 35 - 45 and that would be very slow quiet life in the sticks, not much entertainment budget...
12 - 15k for a small place.. about right..

My life is pretty calm now-a-days, left the mad days behind when I realised I couldn't remember them...55555
Money is not really a problem but I am naturally frugal - lol - I will go into detail next time I go over, when I was there in April/May I met a BM at Nickes who had one or two apartments he rented out, might try and get intouch with him, cant remember his name tho......English guy with thin hair...55555

I wouldn't bother booking anything. In May as now they'll be masses of apartments and houses for rent. So just stay in a hotel for a couple of days, rent a bike and go round. You'll be offered some great deals that time of year.
I had a look at a few yesterday...got offered a top floor large apartment including daily cleaning and internet and with sea view up on the hillside behind Nanai for 100,000 for a year.

Your budget is fine Les, you will get apartments accomodation from 8k upwards, as lil sayes 10 to 15 gets you a nice one/two bedder, I've been offered three bed detached houses with UBC and internet for only 12k. " to 2.5k per day is fairly frugal but can be done but remember you may need to rent a motorbike 100 bht per day but I think you may find accomodation cheaper and make a bit back that way.
All the best you will love it.

Can see your point but think it would be a lot of hassle, however recommend if anyone wants a good 125cc they should contact Livinlos as he has a real bargain available at the moment.

Don't think the maths work out too well with this idea
Les wants to stay for 6months,thats 180days. To hire a bike is 100baht a day
180x 100=18,000B.
Your idea gets him to part with 50k and lose 25k on resale. Not really worth it IMO

daw your right here.maths does not work, but a 6 mth hired motorbike will give you so many problems to deal with ,4 istance :accidents, stealing, and so on,that means to pay it twice.just my opinion,of course

It would all depend on where I find an apartement as to whether renting a m/bike is an option, obviously if I'm in the Patong area then I'd probably leg it, if in the Kata/Karon area then I would probably get a tuk-tuk for the odd trips to Patong - I'll have to play it by ear, as I said money would not be that much of a problem but I do tend to live a relatively simple life now-a-days....5555555
I will get in touch with you all prior to coming over re accom. and also look in the Gazette for the adds.
thanks again guys - good feedback - great forum eh.......

But if you are here for 6 months Les you do not want to spend all your time in Patong. There is much to see on the island, many totally unspoilt beaches, activites to do and sights that spending so long in just one resort town would become boring and be a shame not to see more.
I have known many bm's that have been coming to the island for years and never seen more than the bedroom ceiling or maybe the beach.

2k daily is 60 a per month.. Once you start to have rent, bike, taxis and food.. The odd night out, maybe the company of a lady of negotiable affection etc..
I think 60 is pretty much a nice lifestyle without being out every night and crazy.. Can be done for less and can easily blow a lot more.. But about right IMHO to still have freedom and enjoyment budget.

I would imagine i would get by on less if i lived in Phuket, near a beach..........
2.5k a day would be a very luxurious lifestyle

The lifestyle of a respectable schoolteacher is different to that of a fancy-free single man.
Don't you remember your old mongering/partying days?

I think you would need more money in Patong than BKK or Pattaya.
eg gym was nearly 3X the price in patong versus pattaya.

Patts yes.. BKK I dont know..
I think you could live an economical life easier on Phuket than in BKK.. Maybe thats my lack of local knowledge of BKK but the level of distractions there would be huge.. Then again once you get clued up on happy hours etc maybe you can make savings in the competition of the bigger city atmosphere..

Yes Dodger I will probably move around a fair bit but would still need a base.
Will also go up to BKK and Petchboon with my lady to see her family aswell.
As my tgf will be staying with me I will not be paying the 1000+ per day - however you know women so it could cost me more...5555555
What ever happens I'm really looking forward to it and catching up with a few of the long time BM's.
cheers - Les

I think the numbers you've worked out should cover your stay with much comfort. I don't even spend more than 15,000 bht a month, but then again i also don't go out to patong every night. If i did then i'd be spending a lot more... Your 2500 a day is plenty unless you're planning on eating at Silk or Baan Rim Pa everyday... I even know some thai's that earn 300 - 500 bht a day and with that they pay rent and feed they're families.... In addition just to reiterate what LoS was saying, in may there will be plenty of apartments/small houses for rent, have a friend in Kata paying 10,000 bht a month for a two bedroom house, although only problem is that place doesn't come with a tv... But like LoS said, there are plenty between Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata you should be able to find something easy.
