Strange thing when check-in, possible visa problems?
When I were going to go back to Phuket today from KL with Malaysian Airlines, the clerk checked my passport and asked if I lived in Thailand. I said yes, I work there, then she asked if I had a visa? I said yes and she asked me to show that, which I did and everything fine.
I just wonder what this was about? They never asked something like that before. What would happen if I couldnt show a visa?
What I have in mind is that there were talks last year (I think) about only allow people 3 tourist visas/entries in a row and then you have to stay away for 6 months or so before you can come back, to get rid of people who work illegally in Thailand without proper visa.
Anyone know what is going on?

My best guess...
Thai immifration requires that if you are travelling without visa you need a flight out of Thailand within the 30 days. I think you flew in on a one way ticket, meaning no further flight than Phuket.
If an airline brings anyone in who is violating Thai immigration laws they are to pay a fine and need to repatriate the person.
The clerk was following 'normal' procedure.

I had a r/t ticket from Phuket but I guess your explaination is why she asked. (As it was the last route of my ticket)
I know the rule but never heard it being enforced. And I fly out every 3 months with a similar r/t ticket.

In many years I had it myself only once. At least 8 years ago coming from Sydney. Had to show check in staff enough funds for stay in Thailand and they had a look at numerous entries in Thailand. After that they were ok.

I flew back from KUL on sunday. Didn't get asked anything about a visa. Haven't got one...just went out saturday, came back next day and got a 30-day stamp.
Bit annoying that when you go into Malaysia they give a stamp allowing 90 days yet I only wanted to stay 1 day. Wish it was the same here.

And Holland, Switzerland and USA have no time limit at all if I remember right, they can stay as long they want. Still need visa for employment thought.
Asians get 1 month with some exceptions. 3 months for most European countries (common wealth countries), I also think Thailand should be more relaxed. If Malaysia can, why cant Thailand?

Malaysia was OK to live and work, was no more boring than anywhere else in my opinion, once you got to know where to go. The only thing that they got you for was all the benefits paid for by the company, like housing, bills etc where all taxable at expat rates, that really did put a dint in the bank account at the of the year. I seam to recall it costing me something like AUD10k every year.
